A 650GS .. luckily with the correct cable for my heated vest.
I am going to fit muffs on them too.
Good choice for a commuter. I have a friend who commutes from Cardington in Beds. to Sunbury on Thames on one of those and loves it.

your looking at about 5-6 hours from Aberdeen to Dumfries area of M74 thats without any delays. the weather looks like it's too get colder,
theres plenty travelodge type places at quite a few services around the border it'll just depend on your stamina in the cold.

hi i would take up the trailer option at this time of year wi this weather ,also considering its a new bike to you , its easier tae deal wi ony wee bugs there might be back on your own patch in your own time. cheers enjoy the new bike weathers no always s**te .Besides you cant always trust that gritting

Do you think it is feasible to get from Aberdeen to Gretna green in one go .. leaving around 1pm from Aberdeen. Google Map says it's 4.25 hours and 220 miles. This means given the stops I will do .. it's going to be more like 5.5 - 6 hours. Which means getting there for 7pm.
Why Gretna? THere is a days inn at the welcome break on the motorway?

Tom, there's a cold snap heading into Scotland tonight and we're not sure how long it could last, I would keep your plans as fluid as possible if you can.....also, it's starting to get pretty cold and dark after 3 o'clock so don't expect too much from the Scottish leg of your journey.....
Tom - you could get from Aberdeen to Gretna on one feckin' leg!

I have done long distance but not long distances in the cold ..
My main worry is slippery roads more than anything as I think I can keep toasty warm with my electric vest, muffs etc.
I remember Johnny riding home the day after the christmas dinner. It was slippery .. the traction control lights on my car kept coming on.

plan on the basis that around 4 o'clock it might start getting pretty dark and if it's cold the roads could be less than ideal.....best to be safe......

Take your time, ride as upright as you can easy on the throttle and stop when you want to stop don't over do it as tired ness is your enemy

Keep to about 70mph and the bike hardly uses any fuel ie around 70 mpg. I'd do the flexible bit as well, fill up with fuel in Aberdeen and onto the dual carriageway which IIRC it's been said has a speed camera every other mile. Ride for 3 hours and stop at somewhere like the Hamilton services. Then fill up again and keep heading south if you feel good / the weather isn't too sh1te. Gretna is another hour and a quarter south, but it can get a bit bleak and lonely even on the M74.

Yes but my car doesn't have a tow bar

I do the journey from Aberdeen to Stockport (South Manchester), about once a month and complete the whole lot in a car in around 6 hours or 7 with a few stops all done with the radio on and heate rturned up
.
The roads from Aberdeen are all Motorway or dual carriageway all the way to Slough so although not the most scenic it will be much faster. This next week is supposed to be very cold so you may wish take a few extra layers.
I'm offshore until the 8th so can't meet up with you but if you need any help drop me a pm.
