I washed it today and I was very suprised to see some sort of a first layer of paint going away from the rim of my front wheel ! The ground was littered with hundred of gray paint specks...
There is nothing under it except the usual rim grey color...

Was the rim painted ? What for ?

Hi Machine Cat,

painted rims?

Reggie AKA The Cameraman

Or coated with some sort of grey paint...
I have no idea what it is, I never saw that before...

Hi Machine Cat,

do you mean the rim or the hub?

Gather up the specs into 2 envelopes - one for you, one for them. If they are paint, they shouldnt be coming off. If they are bits of disc - ditto. In fact its hard to think of any legit reason.

Investigate, gather evidence and then complain.

here comes the limit of my english

I think it is the rim : the inside metal part of the wheel (where the alloy parts are "rooted" and where the external part of the tire valve is situated).

Now when I check the rim, I can tell that there is some sort of paint layer that is still remaining, as the layer did not go off on all the rim yet.

The weird part is where that layer went away you still see the normal rim metal gray color, as if nothing happened.

It may be some sort of last protection layer that they put on all their wheels... My bike is a september 2004.

I collected a few paint flakes and I will show them to my BMW dealer...

I'll think about it ...

Sounds like your alloys are flaking paint - been quite a common problem...my mate just had a wheel replaced on his.

Thanks ! Is this a common problem with GS ?
What are the risks for my wheel ?

posted this on..
http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=35637 ....yesterday as foot note to breakdown!!

""Note: Whilst waiting for Mr "fixit"... (and since i couldn't ride it) thought i'd clean Tuesdays crud off of it...

Noticed a patch of what looks like a coating of clear laquer peeling... Err! no.. "flaking"... from the rear wheel.. approx 4 sq inches in size!!!. (anyone else noticed this.. or checked for it recently.. However.. it is difficult to spot once its off.. espec. on a clean wheel rim!!).. Obviously i'll be mentioning this to the dealer too!! ""

Out of Interest.... had all those that experienced the flaking used pressure washers to clean your rims??????

my mate used a karcher as did a bloke that I met at the dealer on saturday...mine has been fine up till now and I use the car wash and a sponge ....but BMW are replacing damaged wheels on warranty...

The answer is yes, I used a karcher and chemicals, but I was very carefull with both. The karcher was set on low pressure and wide dispersion and the chemical is used by all French motorcycle owners... On the top of it, it is not the fisrt time that I clean my bike with a karcher and chemical...

Well, I talked today with a garage owner (car) and he told me that such a problem was the clear sign of poorly coated alloy rim.

I will have a little talk with my BMW friends tomorrow...

Usual build quality then. Great as long as you don't ride it or clean it :D

BMW answer : "no big deal, the wheel will be replaced on warranty."

The nice thing about BMW is that they play the game the right way.
