Find a wire shelf (of decent thickness) from a domestic oven or old BBQ and use that, either rest it on rocks/bricks of fabricate some legs to stand it on.

(I presume that's the kind of grill you mean)

I use a mesh with a handle thing that folds open, put your food inside and then its easy to turn and no chance of dropping it. £5 from a good BBQ supplier

Cooks great for two, packs down small and is easy to clean - Highly recommended.
Not cheap, but I also use it at home for a BBQ when there is only me and Mrs 1150. It sits on an aluminium table and has not damaged the annodised coating despite my best efforts.

I've used a so called puzzle grill, over my firebox for some time and it's a great combination, but not cheap. A much cheaper alternative is available from Heine Gericke. The grill has fold out legs, and the fire bowl is a little like a metal foldable colander, but the combo is very cheap. Don't have the catalogue to hand for the exact price.
My set up will heat 2 pans at the same time. Have a look at the blog. The photos of Elvie and I cooking in the Voges show how it works.
