Hello all,
I'm Steve, an Englishman who lives in Thailand. I have a 2002 1150GS which is great for touring this part of the world. But it has developed a fault which is proving hard to find.
What happens is that when turning, either way, it makes a grinding/rough noise. You can actually 'feel' it more than hear it. It's just as though a brake pad is worn down to the metal, but they are all new. It started to do this about 3 months ago. I then thought that perhaps it was a wheel bearing, so i fitted new bearings to the front wheel and new bearings to the rear drive unit, no change !!!!!
Although sometimes you can feel this roughness when going straight ahead, it is mainly when i turn the bike that it is evident. More so if i have a pillion on board. The oils in both the gearbox and final drive are clean, no signs of metal.
I have Michelin Anakee tyres, not knobblies, which are new and have proved to be very good. ( the 3rd. set i have had on this bike )
It is hard to find anybody here with a good knowledge of these bikes, even at the BMW dealers in Bangkok.
I am at a loss what to look at next ??
I was wondering if it is possible for the drive shaft to rub inside the swinging arm ?? I can feel no play in the swinging arm bearings, but perhaps i will remove it anyway to inspect.
Any help or advise would be very helpfull, i do not feel that i want to take it into the wilds of Asia whilst i have this problem.

Regards Steve............

other things to check would be swing arm pivot brngs and paralever pivot brngs.

i take it you already renewed the single large wheel brng in the FD unit .

if a pillion makes it worse - i'd guess its likely to be any of the above

Yes mate, renewed both the bearings which the crownwheel is supported by. I will have a good look at the swingarm bearings next.

Thanks for your reply mate.
