Grip busted

I put some new grips on at the wekend and a piece of the heating tape broke away on the throttle, leaving a gap of about 6-7 mm. Unfortunatley its the outside wrap - right at the tip of the throttle - and seems to contain the 'wire' ( or whatever is used to carry the current ). The cluch side works ok, the throttle stays cold.

It's a 94 1100gs and the tape was original, so it's hard and brittle and came off in lumps not as a strip.

My question is whether you know a way of patching the gap, or will i need to junk the lot and buy a new one?

I used to think they were a gimic untill a ride to inverness and back in feb busted that myth, i would like to fix em while i've got some cash available.

There is a detailed breakdown on something like IBMWR on how to change the rubber grips on HG's 'cos the grip itself is so cheap. If you can be bothered to try it then it would be a cheap way of doing it. Must be worth a go for us tight wad 11GSers

Bit of a bu88er that. The thing is just wire of a certain resistance and it bugs me that 10 pence of wire can be flogged to us at £50 and we are grateful its so cheap!

Somewhere on the web theres an aricle by EBBO on making your own grips it gives a Maplins part no for the right kind of wire try IBMWR.

When my left grip stopped working, I thought there was nothing to lose by stripping it down & trying to fix it.

I took it right back to the plastic tube that has a channel running around it in a spral, that the heating element runs along & found the heating element had a break, so it unravelled itself. I wrapped it back around & taped the loose ends in place then ran some solder to join the bits across the gap. Once set, I wrapped the whole thing in electrical tape in the same way as the original brown wrap & fitted a new grip with hairspray to lube/bond it. That was 6yrs ago & it's still working, so feel free to try it & let us know how you get on.

Some good stuff chaps, IBMWR was well worth a visit, i'm going to do a big service tomorrow ( first time doing valve clearances on the 1100....eeeek) and will strip it back to the bare grip and see what can be done.
I am not happy about splashing out on a new set without trying some fixes first
