I have now put up around 38,000km on my 2002 GS (43k when I bought it). I have a small list of problems that are niggling.
1. One heated grip is no longer working
2. Rear indicator light not working
3. Valve clearances need checking
4. Battery loosing charge/not recharging
Other than those recent problems, this bike has been superb, I have travelled around South America and a lot of Europe on it, never experiencing anything other than a few punctures, a new poly V belt and new fork seals. Before I bought it 3 years ago it had a full BM service history. Since then I've done most of the routine servicing myself but I need help with trying to fix the heated grip and what are the possible causes of the battery problems.
I hope the battery probs are related to the altenator belt.
Any tips or other problems that are likely to arise would be greatly apreciated.

The battery could just becoming to the end of its likebut its worth
checking the alt voltages t make sure the the alternator is doing its job.

the first thing i can think of with the grips is check the fuse is ok
and that the connections under the tank are in good condition.

hth mate;)

Is it the left grip not working ?

The element breaks inside the grip, usually on the left side due to being pulled on the left grip when putting the bike on the centre stand.

Check for about 13.5V ish across the battery when motor is running.
How old is the battery.Have you checked acid level?.
Is alternator belt OK and adjusted (not slipping).
Do a continuity check on the 2 x 2pin connectors for the grip elements(just follow the cables ).
Read Steptoes valve/endfloat adjustment guide.
Change indicator bulb.
