Don't know about a general recall, but there has recently been discussion of a limited recall of RT/GS models with specific VIN/engine numbers for replacement of clutch components ...

ADVrider has been following this for a couple of weeks, don't know if it will affect this side of the pond ... looks like a faulty batch of components made it out the door ...

Kneejerk reaction

Thanks people ,
Maybe it was just a kneejerk reaction to what I had heard .You guys sound like you are in the loop ,My 04 with 24.000 miles up has had no clutch '' moments"
so would you say I have no need to worry ?

cheers

Might be some truth in this...

My '06 1200GS has just eaten its clutch at 4000 miles.

It started to slip a little yesterday, under acceleration (about 3500rpm, 3rd gear, uphill). I wasn't sure it was clutch, tried to think of what else it could be.. since this is my first BMW I never imagined it would chew a clutch so soon.

Today on the way back from work, it was much worse and by the time I got home only the last 5mm of lever travel had any effect.

They collected it tonight and I'm getting a hire box in the morning, fingers crossed they get it sorted out soon. I'm at the HU meeting in Derbyshire next week.

Anyone else had any problems like this?

Levitan Did you check your hand guards?

If any bikes are involved in the clutch recall they should have been done before they left the dealers, or recalled back to the dealers without being riden as it is a fault with the pressure plate or fly wheel and the actual clutch plate is not replaced.

Quite! I once found my handguard had rotated down and was stopping the clutch coming totally out; more worryingly i had ridden like that for 200 miles, and to this day worry if I might have ground the plate somewhat.

Nonetheless, no damage seems to have been done, and I keep an eye on the left handguard for this reason.

According to Vines, all clutch parts are on "technical hold" from Germany until September. This means that the dealers cannot get a clutch kit from Germany at the moment.

Haven't got any more specifics on this at the moment other than its due to a technical problem in the clutches.

My '06 has just been in for its first service. I'm told that it's one of the few with the clutch problem and has been recalled to be "done". Dealer apologetic as it should have been sorted before being put on the road but slipped through the cracks in the BMW pavement. Booked in for next week. Thumbs up to BMW for taking the hit.
