GS 1250 Black engine paint

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to sort some corrosion that has crept in under the black paint on my engine and swinging arm.

I've seen a couple of posts suggesting different types of paint, however I'm just not sure which one would be the best match to the existing colour.

Can anyone recommend me from experience which paint to purchase?

Hi. The bike is out of warranty now so I didn't think there would be any point in contacting them. Perhaps I should to see what they say? Considering the bike is only 4 years old with less than 10k miles I'm a bit annoyed that corrosion is an issue. If I left it outside over the winter I could understand but the bike has been stored in a container so exposure to salt has been minimal in my time of ownership.
 
Hi gmacd78 , sorry to hear about your paint problem quite a common problem I'm afraid,
When you say you store your bike in a container do you mean a metal shipping type because if you do that may contribute to your problem as any type of metal structure/ metal shed that hasn't been insulated will produce condensation on the inside in the colder months .
Can not help with which paint to use but I'm sure some one will be along soon,

Yeh it's brand new container so good door seals etc. If I can't leave it in there over the winter I don't really have any other options at the moment. I must admit it's a bit annoying having to address corrosion issues on such a new bike that has been well cared for. For a premium bike with so little miles this should not be an issue. It's my first BMW bike and to ride it's superb, it's a shame after all the years they've been making these that they haven't managed to rectify this issue. Hopefully with the GS 1300 this will be a thing off the past!

Hopefully if I find the right paint I'll be able to sand back the affected areas and blend in the paint without it being too obvious. Certainly needs sorting before winter time comes round again.

Will you be riding it through the winter? If not have a look at vac-bags. I've used one to store my GS and now RS in a damp garage over winter.

 
See what RS paints say. I suspect PJ1 satin black would probably do the job - gives an excellent heat resistant finish in my experience: -

Once tidied up, make sure you don't use caustic or salt laden cleaning agents in future. BMW bike cleaner or S-Doc100 works well. Then, once clean/dry take it through a heat cycle & then apply a coating of ACF50 anti-corrosion spray (keep it well away from brakes obvs) in all the exposed areas as well as the nooks & crannies.
 
My first GS had paint the bubbling on the engine at 18 months and 10k. All casings were replaced.
 
Yes I was original owner from new and bike spent most of its life touring around Europe in warm weather it had 28000kms on clock when engine was replaced
As I said bmw know of this issue on the black engine's
 
BMW very kindly replaced the black engine on my 2014 GSA due to a very small spot of corrosion

Corrosion is not an exclusive problem to the silver painted bikes
