Livin' the dream.... (Lowstuff, Suffick)
...having already replaced one rear whell bearing myself when I changed tyres at 700 miles, the second one has now failed to the point where the bike rides like a drunken cow on roller skates.

Made for an interesting ride yesterday to meet noelrobertson, subsequently aborted.

Sorry Noel! :(

Sorry, but if you changed one rear wheel bearing then I would have changed t'other

38,000+ and no sign of cheese yet on mine ;)

But we did call at the Wenslydale Creamery yesterday on the way back from Tan Hill :thumb

having to replace a wheel bearing after 700 miles is just not acceptable, sorry. Local dealership checked the remaining bearing out and claimed it was fine.

Anyhoo, got wheel off and the inside of the hub looks like a tiny bombsite, royally screwed.

Wheel is with dealers now, awaiting verdict.

Rubbish.

Have to ask why you needed to change a bearing at 700 miles yourself!

If it was 700 miles I would presume warranty should be valid?

I'd be very suspicious of such an early failure But even more suspicious that only one went and closely followed by the other!

We'll dealer or no dealer involved I wouldn't replace just one bearing. That having gone will have put undue wear on t'other. Even though it may have seemed OK it's had a bad start in life with its mate going awol.... whatever the reason

Bit like replacing just one brake pad, or a chain without sprockets...
:beerjug:

Cos the wheel was off to change the tyre and it was farked.....

The warranty was valid hence I asked them to check the other, and pay for for the replacement, which they declined to do.

The second bearing catastrophically lunched itself almost exactly 7000 miles later, so not really "close together", but I never had these problems with my Hondas.

Or Yamaha's.

Or Kawasaki's....:augie

One word Micky ...

DENIAL.

I wouldn't change one bearing and I wouldn't buy that cheese again either, I had some the other day and was very disappointed.

Maybe it's just the wheels that are made of cheese :nenau

Nooo - the wheels aren't really made of cheese, its just the bearings that are made from shit ...

The dealer though I think is completely out of orser - EVERYBODY KNOWS that bearings MUST BE CHANGED IN PAIRS ...:blast

I've just checked the service instruction but it says only to turn the wheel over to replace the other bearing, it doesn't specify that it must be done ...

If your AD is telling you that you can only replace one bearing, then I'd seriously question their service knowledge and ability ... seriously, they wouldn't change only one pair of pads on the front brake would they?

I always make sure globs of grease are applied in appropriate wheel bearing points when changing tires. I also regularly inspect and grease front & rear axles with bearings several times during a season. Never had a wheel bearing fail on me since that procedure was adopted. My previous 2008 F800GS did 30 000kms with no wheel bearing issues.

To be safe I'd recommend all owners to take off and reinstall wheels after regreasing the wheel bearings oneself to be sure this is not just "ticked off as done on the workshop's checklist".

warranty bearings

hmmm, i got both bearings and the drive cushions done under warranty after some 12k miles. warranty seems to be all about dealer discretion with BMW. I run a Suzuki car garage and there's far greater uniformity about what constitutes a warranty claim across our network.

Hi Mate,

Sorry to hear about your bearing collapse on Monday. Hope that you get it soughted soon.

Give me a shout when you have transport to meet me.

Cheers,
Noel

If my left hand front indicator bulb blows...should I change the right hand one as well?

:augie:D

I like cheese, me.
