Hi ,

I have the st steel bolting kit from Steptoe - had it over a year and just getting to fitting it now.. anyway i have been trying to change out the disc carrier bolts and noticed there seems to be some severe amount of thread lock stuck in carrier threads - am I right in saying its a 8 x 1.25 metric thread ?? I run a tap through to clean out the T/L but seemed to be picking up q a bit of alloy material which I wasnt expecting - is this the norm ?? I only did a couple after noting this - I couldnt get Steptoes bolts in past a few threads before they clogged up - threads seem same by comparison.. am I missing something ??

would appreciate Steptoes input before I go and wreck things further ..

All GS front disc bolts are the same thread and pitch.

As you've found out it can be tricky cleaning threadlock out of alloy with a sharp tap - tends to want to cut alloy rather then threadlock. Try putting a lengthways saw cut down the threads of one the old bolts with a hacksaw (clean all the old threadlock off it first). Then run a nut down it to clean up the burrs. It turns it into a sort of tap but much less aggressive than a proper one.

Work this 'special' bolt in and out of the threads with acetone (nail varnish remover), picking the gunge out of the sawcut after each pass - it'll take a while, but it'll clean up the threads.

Apologies if this is teaching my granny about eggs.

Gents - thanks for the updates..

I did think about grinding a flat on the old bolts and using that to clean up the threads but as I had the tap handy I just used that - think I will revert to you're method though, it sounds safer !!

thanks again guys..:thumb
