GS Adventure Advice Please

Hi Pips & paps,

I'm going to a bmw dealer at the w/e to possibly purchase a 2007 r1200 gs adventure non abs model.

Have seen it on the web, rang dealer to get most of the 'usual' information out of them.

My question is 'what else should I be looking for'???

There have been 2 recalls done on the bike.
Can someone give me some pointers please.??

Its gonna be different from my current bike ...An SP1 !!

Welcome and hello from the another Southwesterner! I dont have a 1200 but someone will be along to tell you something brilliant I'm sure. If you subscribed (which I can highly recommend) you could search for answers to your specific question... very helpful. First of all welcome.
As regards your purchace is it from a BM dealer? If so all recalls should be done. Also Bm give the option of extending warentee so there might be BM guarente on it. All of the problims are well covered on the site but dont get hung up on them. I have a gsa since Jan 09 13000 miles no probs. If one was to bet what will go first, looking at the threads I would guess battery.

Sorry I see that it is a BM dealer so all SHOULD be in order twist their arm for a good guarentee 1 year should be possible

Hi Ash, and welcome.

1200GSA...Good choice mate

Two recalls might have been the Antenna ring and FPC or Final drive, but ask the dealer what they did.

Does it have the stock exhaust system fitted? Decat headers and sports Can would be a bonus.

Look out for corrosion on the final drive, and engine.

What’s the mileage?

Done 12k, 2 owners, full bmwsh, photos look the nuts, but dealer is miles away.

A good start would be two wheels!


A few bikes had some corrosion issues under the alt belt cover due to sponges I think. As I said I drive the two previous models (1150 and 1100) so can't be too specific... just trying to help with what I can remember and what hasn't already been said. Check the rear wheel for play... stand beside the bike and face the rear tyre (the passenger side.........) kneel down, grab tyre at 9 and 3 position then twist to look for bearing play... anyone else able to help out anymore?

I'd say buy it, the pay 12 quid and you can find out on here about everything you may need to fix... whether it needs it or not!

If it's been all checked through the dealer, it should be OK and come with a warranty. They can tell if it's had an FPC or a ring antenae done under warranty but to be honest, I wouldn't worry about that because not all bikes suffered and they recalled most of the faulty batches.

Check for a bit of corrosion around the final drive, front of the engine and wheels and get some knocked off the price if there is any but being such a low mileage bike, I bet it's never seen the cold

Have 07 GSA problems as mentioned above 2X final drives 1 warped rear disc and 1 battery replaced recently with an odessy.
2 recalls antenna and FPC
Have you tried the BMW dealer in Dorchester think its CW didnt end up getting a bike from them but they let me try out several bikes one saturday very helpfull.
Have to say the SP1 is the only Honda bar the RC30 that has ever tempted me to a test ride it was Harris set up superbike replica and it was awesome

Good luck. BMW dealers are very stubborn when it comes to deals on their bikes. You will probably get an offer of discounted accessories or helmet/clothing before a reduction in the price of the bike.

Yep I would agree with that statement, I was offered a discount on clothing and stuff like that. The bikes sell so well they don't play with the prices.

Ask for a full set of panniers, fitted.
If you start asking for a lot, you might get something even if it's a little less...
And ask them about fuel pump recall, just in case.
And about any clutch "gremlin", you don't want to squeeze air after a long run on motorways...

The only thing with it is that it doesnt come with panniers. Is this the norm? I see on web they are about 1k for sides and top boxes??

Subscribe, then you can pm one of the fine GS'ers in the vendors section such as Redcap, The Civil One etc who can do you a set of panniers and rails for a lot less than 1K

I have 57 plate GS not ADV but I bought from BM dealer and have to say they were great.
Never expected to by from a dealer but they gave me great trade in, knocked £250 off the GS, full service and warranty.
They have done me good deals on extras I've bought over the last 4 months since I've had it (autocom rear mudguard etc).
So from my experience I'd say go for it mate, you won't regret it

Its the red ones that are the fastest (just like the buses ) ( yes ive got a red one)
Welcome to the site mate im sure, if you end up buying the bike it will put one of those never ending smiles on your face (so make sure you clean your teeth).

As far as things going wrong "touch wood" have the GS and then the GSA without an ounce of trouble for the last 3 year the bike just gets better the more you ride it so enjoy

If I were going to look at it, first thing I'd check is the price. It's an average milage non-ABS machine, so should be up below list.

Then I'd look for corrosion as mechanical stuff should have been done if it has FBMWSH. For corrosion check front engine plate, you could even ask to inpect under plastic cover. Look around the engine bars as they can rust. Spoke nipples can also go as can the finish on the rims.

Check for any misting of oil between gearbox and engine or drive.

Finally I'd ask about the maintenance history of the bike. Some have had new final drives, engine rebuilds etc. it would be nice to know.

I would ask for up to £500 discount on the bike + panners.. There is a gazillion bikes for sale out there.... You can always go elsewhere or wait a bit?
