Hi all,

I bought a new GSA LC from Pidcocks, who have generally been very friendly and helpful.

However, I also bought panniers for the bike. I was warned that there's been a delay of 2-to-3 weeks on getting locks for these panniers, possibly a manufacturing issue / recall. I think I even heard that locks were "dropping out". Other dealers said similar things too, not just Pidcocks.

It has now been almost 2 months waiting. Pidcocks received 5 locks a couple of weeks ago, but need 9 total to install the 2 panniers + top box.

I wanted to warn everyone about this lock situation, and appreciate any advice. I'm asking Pidcock if there is any compensation from BMW even.

Waiting on these panniers has spoiled my plans of summer motorbiking, getting to Europe and maybe Iceland. A large part of buying the GSA was to get some better panniers, though now I rather think I should just have got some decent SW Motech ones for my good old Tiger 800XC which I traded in.

Cheers

Alex

That's a new development, I waited a few weeks and used a softbag for the interim.

The locks falling out is an error on the part of the installer. Some were forgetting to instal the locking wafer. Once in, insert key, partially turn it and give it a good pull. If it stays put you are good to go.

Hi John,

When did you get your panniers? It sounds like it is a relatively new development - from when I bought my bike 2 months ago. Previous to that, yes, there was a delay of 2 or 3 weeks as you got, and as I was warned to expect.

I gather Pidcock have around half-dozen customers waiting on these locks now.

I've been using roll-bag etc though of course not the same potential for an adventure as a full pannier setup.

Cheers

Alex

I was told mine would be 3 weeks too but in fact I received them after 2 I installed mine myself as I had already got the boxes as they arrived after a week.
As Jon says no problem with fitting just insert the key which closes all the locking tabs then insert, continue turning until it clicks into to place give a pull to confirm the spring tab has located correctly and that's it good to go.
In fact you can actually see the tab when it is in position.
Hope your locks turn up soon.
Terry

I've been waiting for locks for the last 2 weeks and have been told that BM have change manufacture due to locks falling out, and that I may have to wait another 2 weeks ... not a problem though as I only have ordered a Top Box for carrying my work gear.

i was told 6 weeks back in late august.!! but when the bike came two weeks later the top box was on and the key was the same as the ignition one..no probs here

I'm taking delivery of a new GSA this saturday and the dealer warned me today that there might be a delay with the locks for the boxes. He didn't specify or suggest a time. having read this thread, I now know why.

it would be good to know if they offer any compensation but I wouldn't hold your breath eh!!? :augie

I enquired about a set of panniers and top box today for my gsa I picked up on Saturday I was told two to three weeks for the locks due to the fact bmw wont just send the locks out like they used to for the older style ally panniers because they now come pre set to the key via the chassis number so the whole process takes longer from ordering at the dealer to the job sheet being picked up and the locks matched to the bike in germany before being sent back to said dealer to be fitted to your bike:tumbleweed

Well last Saturday I bought two second hand panniers from M4TR1200GS off the forum & having made suitable prior arrangements went straight to Cannons in Braintree where they fitted two locks to them & charged me about £40.

is this the Panniers of a 2014 model ? I'm told those locks can't be re jigged like the old ones could with just new Wafers ….

To be honest I have no idea, but they are LC side panniers & bloke on parts service desk did it while I looked for gloves & looked like similar job to the lock swap I'd did last year to my '55 plate GS

id say these where pre LC panniers ..takes around ten mins to re key it ….the new LC panniers can't be re keyed in house …which makes it another win win for bmw ,cos you can't really remove the panniers and sell separately .unless of course you sell with a key !

the new GSA LC panniers dont fit the pre 2014 bikes ,,I'm told that too …so if you have a 2013 GSA it will be the older style lock in the Panniers

I'm thinking you have the vario side panniers for the standard GS WC, the locks are different & are easily configured using the 'wafers' & there are plenty of stock of them.. (I have 2 locks if anyone is desperate.)

The LC GSA panniers can be coded in house. The locks didn't arrive from BMW for my bike, so one of the guys at Bahnstormer coded some locks for me.:thumb

I've been informed today there will be a delay of a month for coded locks for my panniers. Something to do with needing VIN number for coding. As my panniers were ordered at the same time as the bike I would of thought it wouldn't have been too much of a problem to supply the locks with the bike when it left the factory.

Try ordering bare locks to code up yourself, I'm assuming they're available re Nuttys post above..

Correct - my dealer did this for my 2 GSA panniers back in June although it tuck them 3 hours to do the 6 locks - lucky I was not paying for the labour ;)

I assume the new locks must be more difficult to re-key hence the dealers wanting to get them done directly by the factory.

My new baby should have arrived Monday last week. I found out today that it now won't be here until next week. I'm booked on a boat on Thursday! Oh....and they don't have the locks for the panniers. You can't fit them to the bike without the locks....thats what I'm being told! Really frustrating. Certainly an Achilles heel! :blast

You can fit the panniers onto bike without lock. The clamps will still fit onto frames and then just cable tie them shut! You won't of course have security!
