Reliving bike trips whilst sat at my desk....
From what people have said in the past, I have often been left with the impression that the ADV tank, although bigger, does not let you reach all the fuel and I have been told on occasion that as much as 5 litres of the 36 or so is inaccessible. This true?

The only real thing I would change on my GS is the tank volume and have toyed with swapping to a GSA tank. Given the price and the possible problem above I thought, for less money, one could have a section worked into the GS tank to "open" it up. IE cut off the top third and weld an area of plate there to give it a fatter top half and hence more volume.

Would make baglux obsolete, and cost a bit, but I know that I can can reach every drop in my GS tank, and a GSA tank can stretch to about £6-700, so perhaps financially viable after all.

:D :augie

Have you caught some tropical illness Nick?

Probably cost more to get someone to fabricate such an item, then the respray? Than it would to buy second hand.

Are all the "pinking" problesm resolved now you're home?

One of the problems with the tank design is that the RH lobe has some fuel left that cannot be accessed by the fuel pump unless the bike is laid on it's side in an emergency.

One way round this is to have two lengths of weighted pipe running down to the bottom of each lobe.
It comes to a T piece in the filler neck with a short length of pipe running upwards that can be plugged with a bolt or similar.

When the tank is full, remove the bolt/plug and syphon the fuel up, bend it over and replug, then push the pipe down below the filler neck.
This will keep a syphon of fuel from the RH side to the LH side when the level is low.

You only need to 're-bleed' the system if you run so low that air is drawn into your 'U' tube.

The ADV tank of course already has a balance pipe running between the two lobes.

I have had no pinking probs at all, namely due to the fact that the bike is in a crate on a ship somwhere in the southern atlantic as we speak. See what a bit of tuning can do? I know if it is still a problem as soon as I fill up in Tilbury!!

I am actually really missing it at the mo'. Serious withdrawl symptoms.

As for the grand tank plan, nothing set in stone. Just a thought I once had and I may look into. GSA tanks seem so expensive considering you don't get the full tank range (barring the Timolgra plan).

Then again, I never needed more in Argentina, so perhaps I'm just craving for a project!!

Nope. As Tim said;

The ADV tank of course already has a balance pipe running between the two lobes.

The neck does stop you filling it right up to the brim tho, so you don't get the full 35L in, which could be what you've heard. You can get round that with a simple mod.

!!

You do  maybe 10miles max worth of fuel left at the bottom when you run out ( about 20miles in a standard tank), which you can get by tipping the bike on it's side.

Better idea would be to cut the top off an ADV tank . No, forget it. Cheaper just getting a 40ltr acerbis

well it depends on

what you want
my 02 adv came with the small tank, it's now got the 30 Ltr.
cost £300
it now does another 100 ish miles before needing to refill.
does it need it ? in this country, no
any where outside of western europe , maybe
when I had a bandit 12 it did 100 miles to a tankful and so touring was an arse
when I had the 21 Ltr tank I almost ran out a couple of times in eastern europe, now that I've got the 30 ltr tank I will probably still run out ,I will just be a 100 miles further down the road:D :D :D :D

if you can't find anything better to do with £300 , then do it and put a decent rear shock on , while you're at it

have fun

Rob

I'm just going by what I've been told by the owners. I was told on my trip and before that although the GSA tank has a 35L odd capacity, you could only use about 28-30L of it for some reason.
If that is not the case, fair enough, I stand corrected.
Either way, GSA tanks are very expensive in most cases. As for Acerbis, I'll have to hunt around. The most I knew was that TT did a 44L one for a ludricrous amount of cash...

The warning light comes on about that point - there's still a healthy amount of usable fuel left at that point. I've certainly done around 20 to 30 miles after that and the tank then took around 32 litres to fill when I got to the petrol station. I reckon on around 100 motorway or A road miles left when the RID fuel indicator hits three bars, and around forty before I need to worry too much when the light comes on. I've never, to be honest, used that forty miles as I tend to start thinking "refuel" around the three bar point.

I got my 41 litre Tourtech of the German E bay for £500, standard fuel sensor seems good enough.
Dont have to fill it right to the brim anymore or ride 40 miles with warning light on just to get decent range.
Can get 400+ if I do fill right up before low level lamp comes on though which is nice for me as I dont like stopping much.
Feels very odd when you go from empty to full but after 10 miles I am used to it.
