Got the rear wheel on last night, the front was covered in another thread. Some reworking of the hugger brackets was required, the wheel bolts required a washer (as DEN did with his) and the abs pickup needed shimming out a bit.

Coolcarbon,

I bought a pair of RT panniers with the intention of refitting the cat' and a wee stub pipe. How does it compare with a Remus & Y? Also where can I get a proper front mudguard in UK? Don't say 'send for one in Germany' . I got some bits for a Varadero there, eventually.

You'll have to send for one from Germany....:D

I don't believe there is anyone here knocking them out, so that's it I'm afraid unless you come with a conversion on your Varadero jobby...:nenau

It's quieter with the Cat and Stubby, even when I 'improved the flow' within the Cat...so much so, it passed the MOT ..:thumb

Still sounds a lot better than standard setup...:thumb2

gutting the cat

Mike,

I dismantled the cat' on my old r1150r (possibly 1st 2spark in Scotland, bought 23/12/02, sold 6months later during cash flow crisis) cut it completely in two then removed the compressed catalytic gubbins and perforated the baffle plates before welding it all back up. I posted pics on the r1150r site at the time, but can't find them now. I was disappointed it made little difference, so I'll be leaving the gs cat' alone.

The front mudguard needs replacing. I might start hacking about it with the 'get out of jail' tool, but it doesn't seem as though it will look right regardless. I did the same job on a Triumph Tiger and turned out fine:

I tried to get stuff from Germany before, long story, but read this thread from the Varadero uk site. My posts are johny c:

I looked at your homepage Mike, you've got a better job than the Queen now. I go up to Lewis every year, a pilgrimage of sorts because my mum was from Ranish and it's holy ground to me:

righto then, I'm away to put the cat' back on

I can see why you're reluctant to buy from over there after that load of hassle...

These guys have a Paypal account so would be OK... http://www.boxer-design.de/en/vorderrad-kr1150radv.htm they do one in plastic as well as Carbon.

As do these Guys, in fact, they take C/Cards.. http://mtec.eshop.t-online.de/epages/Store.sf/?ObjectPath=/Shops/Shop00527/Products/F087

I've used both in the past without a problem...

more banana skins

Mike,

Thanks for the links, but my heart sunk when I read the instructions: "Fill in this form, copy it and fax us the details." Aw whit? I don't even know where I can find a fax machine.

But never mind that the now. I just took off the exhaust system and thought I'd try the left RT pannier for size. I must have missed the bit in the other threads where it said 'you must first buy a suitable footrest plate because the RT pannier will not marry up to the GS one.'

So assuming, if I dare, that there is a simple 'bolt on' solution. What am I looking for? RT footrest plate? Too late for the IOM this weekend, I'll have to borrow my mate Frank's left side pannier. But I'll carry on with the cat' / stubby mod.

apart from that, life's a gas:D

This what I have, from a company....you've guessed it, in Germany..:D

You'll get the idea though and may well be able to knock something similar together...

It doesn't carry any weight, merely locates/stabilises the box...:thumb2

You may have to remove the plastic cover on the original locating lug (2 screws on the extreme left of the photo) as this was forcing my pannier to sit away from the top rail a wee bit. just covered it with tape. it now acts as a further contact point for the front of the box.

sorry Mike, I just couldn't face the paperwork.

That's the nice new wheel on now, pity Motobins sent me the wrong speedo drive for it. I know that there are at least two different size 2.6 speedo drives, because I put a hacksaw through the longer version to make it fit the modified 1100s wheel (lurking in the background) No time to send it back to be exchanged, off to IOM Sunday, so fashioned some spacers from the redundant gs original. Turned out alright in the end.:)
