Okay, so I'm sure this is a totally stupid question but while downpipes follow the same route around the bike to the silencer, some downpipes are linked across the lower part of the front of the engine and some just have down pipes. Why is this, and what's the difference? Just wondering if anyone can explain this :comfort

the ones without the link are after market pipes and don't have a cat either. The link pipe is supposed to aid low rev torque but some of the after market manufacturers think it doesn't I presume since they don't include it.

I think most of us prefer the type that doesn't have a cat in it. The remus headers, that you need to install to "de-cat" the bike doesn't have the cross pipe and is one of the more popular mods.

Removing the cat does give a slight power increase, but it makes it more rideable by flattening out the torque dip mid-rev range.
