I have the original exhaust/silencer on my spanish R80GSPD ´91 ,and on the outside is immaculate. However its guts are loose and annoyingly rattly, to the point that when its off the bike i can shake out bits.
What are my options ?

1. corrective surgery ? anyone ever seen inside this silencer ?
2. live with it
3. get a new one ( not possible right now)

anyone got any experience of this ?

Un Saludo.

I had to replace the standard pipe on my 100PD. I bought a Keihan not cheap at £350 but works well enough.

Most vintage ar Harley bike shops will have baffles that simply push into the outlet end of you exhaust, and they can make a surprising difference.

If the guts really have gone in your muffler you could probably get one in the front too - there is enough clearance between the muffler and the pipe to get something in there .

My old Venom was silenced that way - there was a resonator , a capped tube about 10" long with maybe a dozen 1/4" holes in it and it slipped over the end of the exhaust pipe. The fish tail muffler slipped over both and the pipe clamp held everything together.
The fish tail was empty, the only other baffling was the fact that the outlet was a few more 1/4" holes in the fins of the fishtail. This worked really well, at least until the resonator broke off and fell into the fish tail.

Come to think of it , I have seen fish tail baffles sold to fit into the end of straight pipes - probably made for Harleys , although I have a vague recollection of seeing some pics on a forum somewhere of an airhead with them fitted - probably in the US, of course.
