Just curious as to what you think has caused the problem? Is it stone damage off the front tyre, or that foam thing under the alternator belt cover holding moisture?

Water based paint on improperly passivated alloy which is then attacked by flying stones and salt spray from the front wheel which is held in the sponge sound-deadening foam under the black plastic cover on the timing chest.

Foam thing - Corrosion starts under the black plastic cover.

When I took mine to bits after 2 weeks off the road the foam was still soaking wet... can't be good can it... no matter how well you wash your bike.

I was on my 3rd warranty timing cover - If I'd known I would have taken the foam out after they renewed it last time..

Hey-ho!

Mine went a bit like this: http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=167909

...she's had 2 MOT's since and both times I have been complimented on the condition of the bike.

I would do it sooner than later, and replace those bolts too.

Just powdercoated mine, changed bolts for stainless from Shaw Stainless (google it, he specialises in BMWs) and changed alternator belt.

I removed the foam and smeared the cover with grease where it is hidden by the black plastic cover.

Grease in not a good idea. Its a suspension of oil in soap which is unfortunately hygroscopic (i.e. it pulls water out of the air). Vaseline or a cheap generic equivalent is the stuff to use.

Try riding it instead of polishing it then.

No fender extender

10 years use

43,000 miles

Pity the 1200 front covers can't do the rest of the bike justice any more :blast

No need for a repaint on this 11GS:augie
