To go against the praise for TFT slightly, my concerns are;
Potential of cracked displays (ducati Panigale anyone?)
Easier to read? not so sure, can read standard type display (17 model) in all conditions. Sometimes TFTs are really bad in sunlight.

My feeling is that we are looking at the latest 'must have' fashion/update. It adds nothing to the ride or required information. If sat nav is still a separate display its a redundant feature anyway.
A real improvement would be the nice, simple and clear display from the S1000r.

It's great on my KTM, but I wouldn't change the GS just for this feature. It's the last major update before the new GS comes, so there's much better stuff to wait for.

KTM are going to be doing a big software update this month, with rumours of the GPS addition amongst other stuff, so it'll be interesting to see how it compares.

Well I have a good excuse, returning to a gsa.

Mr Neil W, I am confused by your date format - Are you an amercian?

I do agree with you however - I find it difficult to see my speed at a glance - too many numbers, dashes etc My VFR dash was clear as anything (apart from reflections)

I would post a picture, but can't work out how to, must read instructions.....

That is a continental date format , however, it is not my bike, mine was the earlier dash but was sold at the beginning of the month prior to the arrival of a new bike

BMW seem to go out of their way to actively block developers and users from having the full functionality of the devices.
Take Spotify - been on Garmin for a long time - yet it take a NEW device for it to appear and then its shit!
Surely it cant be that difficult for someone to hack the ROM on the V or VI to move the app interface over from the Zumo so it actually works in the same seamless way.
Garmin actually told me that they are blocked from altering/adding features and updates that their systems get.
Only have to see the removal of support for the V as evidence.

just had an email today from BMW about the new dash, looks good.

Will the first person to get one let us know what it is like?

I see it is a £595 option, does this make the Navigator redundant? or will you need both? anyone know out there?

Lastly is it a retro fit?

so many questions......[/QU

I have a GSA Rallye TE with the new dash coming in less than 2 weeks, couple days to run in then Ill be putting a couple of thousand miles straight on cannot wait should be a good test,

Picking up my new exclusive next Saturday.
Had to get a new phone as my old one didn't support the connected app.(first world problems I know)

The main issue I have with the TFT is the price tag of £600 for example KTM 390 circa £4500 has TFT the BMW 310R circa £4500 with no TFT (very similar bikes and specs made in India). I think the additional so called 'extra' cost is taking the Michael out off its customers. It should just be included in the price surely like the mentioned example. if we want to further advance such kit then in my view it needs to allow you to up load custom routes surely that is the way forward not answering the phone while riding.

Please don't order the 'extra' or a new bike on the strength of this latest 'extra' then BMW might get the message. I am old enough to remember when buying a car with two speed wipers was an optional extra then the japs came along with it all included in the price, guess what the rest of the car manufactures upped there game.

I agree........ charging for the dash is a step too far.
It should be on the bike as standard and then maybe charge to have some of the advanced functionality activated.

Sent from a OnePlusX.

Mines due in October, interestingly my dealer told me that was earliest possible time because of the tft, Annoyed at my dealer about that.

If the charging for the dash includes the Nav features, then fair enough. It's looking like KTM & Ducati will be charging a premium to activate the maps, so maybe paying for the fancy dash on the GS isn't unreasonable after all.

:rob That's one that agrees with me, lets see if I can get 1000's then bmw might take note, shit wrong app oh no will the TFT do that !?!?!?

You will probably need to spend upwards of £200 on a compatible smartphone if you don't have a suitable one already. This is needed to run the app which provides the navigation, music, and phone call handling features of the display. The app itself is free. I don't know if the app includes mapping data on the phone or if it relies on you having a data contract to download it on the fly.

You will then have to provide somewhere waterproof to stash the phone, preferably in reach of a USB power lead as using navigation/location services on a phone needs to use the GPS chip in the phone and tends to run the battery down fairly quickly. It can also make phones run hot, so you may not want it in your pocket. I believe KTM provide a compartment in the fairing for this.

Don't play the game then you wont need to pay it is an unreasonable cost hold out for a better deal. Use consumer strength rather than keeping up with the jones mentality.

No chance of any consumer pressure here! I've never been on a forum where people change their bikes so readily to get the latest upgrade, or at least that's the impression I get. Still, I'm a GS newbie - give me time, and a warranty which is about to expire, and I may well join the frequent upgraders club! 😁

Thats not always the case my change is forced due to issues with previous bike otherwise I would have waited at least 2 yrs and for me the fact they have updated the screen comes as bonus (albeit a £600 one)
