Hi

If you are owner of GS/GSA LC, ideally 2014 model, could you contact me to meet and compare our gearbox/clutch operation?

I've got 2013 which had 2 clutches replaced, including pushrods and very recently also master cylinder as well and I think my gear shifts 1-2-3 are awful especially when canning my bike.

When I miss 2nd gear and end up in Neutral I'm getting horrible clunk into 2nd which feels like gearbox is about to explode. Clunk into 1st is relatively mild comparing to missing 2nd gear.

On top of that my bike was missing gears when I was in Alps and heavily downshifting before hairpins, where instead of 1st gear I would end up in either Neutral or switched back to 2nd(happened couple of times but not as often as going back to N). All gear changes were very confident and with enough tension on gear lever and gear indicator was already showing 1st gear engaged for a second or two before dropping back to Neutral. I've got it captured on my gopro as well.

After recent master cylinder change (BMW insisted on dealer to replace it after raising PUMA case), every gear change 1-2-3 feels harsh and requires more effort, but as I did only 20ish miles I can't tell if this recent change made any difference to rectify a problem, but it certainly didn't as far as gear operation is concerned.

My idea is to meet with one of you guys who own GS/GSA LC and they are 100% satisfied with their gearbox operation to exchange your thoughts about my bike (including riding it).

This is my first GS ever so I don't know if this is me being paranoid about it, or there is problem with my bike which I need to take it further with dealer, but before I'm about to become really annoying customer I want to be 100% sure that there are bikes out there which work better than mine. The only new bike I was riding with LC engine was new RT with 8mls on the clock when I left my bike for first clutch replacement and I don't recollect any issues with gears shifting. I was also riding F800 GSA and recently F800GT which both of them have great operating gearboxes comparing to my GS!

I hope you can help me as I'm really concerned about my bike and it spoils the fun of having it. Much appreciated for any contact.

I will come up to your house, ride your bike for a day (roughly 300 miles) and report back.

Tecman....I feel for you, I really do.

Your first experience of the GS range and you get one with a dodgy gearbox.

You don't need to ride someone else's bike to know if yours is not right,if it's not right it's not right.

My gearbox was awful, the suspension was very harsh and it was a dog to ride in traffic.

Sadly after a 25year relationship with BMW I got rid of my 13plate gswc and moved onto pastures new.

I'm now a very happy bunny again.

Good luck with finding a solution.

Steve

You could always turn up at a local dealer stating that you are interested in changing to the latest version and ask to take their demo bike out for a test ride. That should give you more than enough time to compare.

My dealer knows about my gearbox problems, but they say that all GS's do that...

Hi Steve,

Only problem I've got that I do enjoy the bike, except that gearbox, and before I decide to change it to something else, I'd rather use all available options with BMW if other bikes fine ( given that so many of GS LC riders are pleased with their gearboxes).

One more thing to add is ( which I found on this 1k post thread about clutch issue) that since first clutch replace, my gear changes actually became worse, than they were on stock one with exception that the rear wheel is no longer spinning when clutch and 1st gear is engaged.

and I'll ride yours?:)

I don't have a GS, so I'm not sure what you'll learn.

Seriously, how much have you ridden your bike and where? I am happy to take you on a 200 / 250 mile jaunt around Essex, Suffolk, Cambs and N'hants to see if you can gel with the thing and / or use the gearbox a lot.

Careful where wapping takes you. He's catholic

Run when he buys you a nice cream!!!

I did 9k mls since January 25th. I've been in Spain and Alps, so loads of occasions to play with gears.

I would let you ride mine, but it's being traded in at the end of next week against a new GSA, so I'd rather not risk it. I'm happy to ride yours though, and give you my feedback.:thumb

Hi, feeling it for anyone with a problem with their bike...

I moved from an 11 plate GSA to a September regd GS WC, first I struggled occasionally with getting neutral, dealer fitted new push rod at first service, don't think it made an immediate difference, but after maybe 1500 miles no more sticky problems..
Now me as opposed to most on here, with my GSA I found lots of neutrals, it jumped in & out of gear, frightened the shit out of me, (more than once) that was till someone on here advised me to be more positive with my feet & gear changes, then no more problems, it was defo rider error.. (I'm not saying yours is, but mine WAS) & I had previously came off a F800Gs so I thought I knew BMWs
Now, this new bike, the WC GS, nav 5 saying 38,000+ gear changes! & not one missed gear, in fact slick I would say, requiring less effort on my part & much more care free attitude to gear changes.. Yes it clunks a tad into first gear at traffic lights, but I accept that as most wet clutch bikes I've had do the same (or worse)
One thing to check is the gear lever height adjustment, if it's too high your ankle may not have enough upward travel to engage gear properly, simple thing really but worth checking..
Also I agree with Todmeister & Nice n Fat to ride a demo bike to compare gearbox operation, but seriously have a look at lever adjustment..
Good luck & keep us informed..
