GS is still the best !

There is certainly more, what I would class as middle class wankers riding GS's, other marques seem to have the more down to earth, one of the lads type owners. GS owners strike me as having a superiority complex.

Generally do no more than 2000 miles a year most of which is down to the local meet and back to pose, am I wrong....no didn't think so.

Another thing that is sort of unique to BMW is the dealerships. More dealerships with most models available for a test ride all year round. The customer service is very good, I'm not talking tea and cakes. Plus it is a brand and lifestyle that is promoted. All that makes a difference and people want to buy into it.

BMW are also good at handling irregularities. As an example, shortly after the LC RT was launched, there was a 1 (one) bike that failed on the rear shock, and 1 (one) more that displayed a weakness.
BMW immediately stopped delivery world wide, and to the riders involved they said: "Go to the showroom, and pick the bike you want as a loaner until the issue is fixed." They are good at building brand loyalty.

Compare this to HD: A friend of mine has ordered a Pan America, but the delivery date is being postponed again and again. When he signals that this will ruin his planned vacation and try to suggest the option of either get out of the contract or any other solution he ends up in a 'fine print interpretation circle'. Absolutely no efforts to help him in any way....

I think we're in danger of getting branding and marketing muddled with 'best bike'.

Is a Rolex the best watch out there? No! There are a hundred and one watches that are technically 'better' than a Rolex. Omega movements for example, are (in my humble opinion, but I do my homework) probably blowing Rolex movements out the water.

But what to the masses is more desirable on your wrist? I'd say a Rolex is. Rolex are masters of branding and marketing, controlling the market for their watches, their re-sale price etc etc. A Rolex is the watch to buy, but its most certainly no better than many many other brands.

There are many BMW bikes that I would have in a heart beat - S1000RR, RS, and if I was doing regular long haul, an RT.

The RS and RT have very limited competition, the Japs just dont seem interested in sports tourers or full on tourers at the moment? No Pan European, No VFR1200 ......

For me .... FOR ME (!) is the GS the 'best bike'? Not for me. Id rather have other things (like an RS!)
Is BMW marketing and Branding good? Yes. Very. On par with Rolex.

I get it, they only sell bikes in the UK. Not in the rest of the world :blast

You said they make brilliant bikes and quoted their sales volumes as proof. In the context of this thread that's not really relevant because the bikes they sell in vast numbers are in the main small capicity simple machines. You might as well quote the numbers of mowers they sell too as part of your argument for Honda's sales success.

Really, do you think that the world rides big capacity bikes?

It was in reply to Engineers post to show how irrelevant sales figures are to determine what is the best bike. Utter tosh. There is no such thing otherwise it would be the single best selling bike that everybody can afford. Actually, yes there is, a Honda small capacity bike :blast

If sales figures are anything to go by to determine what is best then it is skewed in reality. Take income for example. If you earn the average wage in the UK you are in the top 6% of wealthy people in the world. What you buy here in the UK is not representative of what everybody else buys in the world. Not everybody can afford soap, milk, baked bread or even salt. So those statements fall to the wayside if you dissect the argument.

I am superior , I am also complex , but I do many ,many miles all for fun and avoid the bike meets as they normally attract blackguards who have little understanding of reality and the brilliance of the GS brand and the Germanic DNA ... tee hee:green gri:green gri
They normally group in close company with purchased second hand track tyres , full leathers and white boots .. funny lot these Jap bike owners.

purchased second hand track tyres , full leathers and white boots ..

:D:D:D I remember that crap at the track days. Did know what he bought off the race team but it was a slick tyre ragged to bits. Bargain :D

Without doubt, the best bike in the World will always be one of the ones I have in my garage. What anyone else thinks is of no consequence.

Yep , new tyres , as many sessions as you could before they went off and change them or sell them on to a garage wall knee slider scratcher...its a funny old world. I have even had people ask for old knee sliders as they know I did track days..

Well the guy on the GS that let me have a sticky string puncture repair at Cheddar Gorge last year wasn't like that at all. He was very happy to help me out

I'm always impressed when I meet people with such wisdom and broad mind :D :okay

Not quite true. They are an excellent measure of popularity and also a good measure of trends & fashions but they are not necessarily the best measure of “bestness” :D.

The best bikes sell well, the worst do not.
