GS or GSA

Ok, I decided last night after watching some offload videos of GS, and GSA that the Enduro gearbox is the deciding factor for me. Went into the dealers and they told me I could special order a standard GS! Result, I thought until after numerous calls to BMW Motorrad Germany it turns out you could do this back in march but they have removed the option as a) nobody took up the option b) because of the first reason it did not make economic sense to change production sequence. :blast.

So after much negotiating and discussion, I am now the proud owner of a 2012 R1200 GSA in white sandrover with all the bells including enduro gearbox! :D

Bike is in country at distribution just waiting for confirmation of pick up dates! now to come up with a suitable large chested German name for her!

Thanks for the help.

Enjoy the new bike :beerjug:

Might just be me but I'm confused - what did you order in the end, a GS with Enduro box, or a GSA with Enduro box?

Doesn't he say 2012 GSA white sandrover above?

Great choice, you'll love the enduro gearbox even if you won't notice the difference :thumb
I have it on mine as well, makes me feel very proud with that "I could ride around the world any day" feeling... :aidan

Good work.:beerjug: Don't forget to post some pics once you pick it up.:thumb

Hi,
Having just sold my beloved FJR and a not so beloved FLSTN I am close to placing deposit on a new GS. Won’t be my first BMW having had a R75/6 as a youngster and a R1150RT. The bike will be used as most, i.e. 75% commuting, 20% touring with the balance being the odd green lane explore.

Looking at the models the Adventure stands out for its increased suspension travel and off road pretences, but I don’t care for the additional 30 Kilos in dry weight. The GS Rallye has caught my eye as it has the enduro ESA and wire wheels but not all the gubbins of the GSA.

2 questions I need the experience of the board to help me with.

Is it possible to increase the suspension travel on a enduro ESA equipped GS to match the taller Adventure?

Does the standard Fuel tank provide enough real world range (i.e. 250 miles between pee/fuel/ coffee breaks) or does the bike really need the additional 11 ltrs of the Adventure?

Thanks for your support.
Hi. I've bought a GSA. previously had a GS. Always thought a GSA was not really required for real world. MISTAKE! I finally test rode one. Huge difference which really surprised me. Got 32" leg so can get foot down comfortably. Try both and think about what it will be used for. Green laning works well with both. They are epic!

I picked her up on Saterday. Have spent the weekend riding around the Cotswolds in between family duties, she now has 140 miles on her and I can say I really like this bike. Sharp handling, good lean angle, plenty of usable power. Did one small lane and she was very manageable. I can see that momentum will be my friend offload!

Now to read the manual and get everything adjusted to fit me perfectly. I've ordered a machine Art mudslinging and fender extender this weekend so I guess the Farkeling has begun.

Safe Riding

One week in and really enjoying the bike got to put some miles on yesterday with a local riding group. Check out Ride-it.co.uk great couple that are really trying to expand the view of England as a touring destination.

Went to Long Myn in Shrewsbury by some lovely back roads and out of the way coffee shops. It really pays to have local knowledge in these events.

Even had a tosser from London join the ride, Ciao Nico, hope you had a good ride back.

Hi there, nice to meet you on Sunday. It was such a blast! :thumb2 Well done to Lloyd and Yvonne for organising it. The ride back was fun as well, nice back lanes through Worcestershire and Oxfordshire...just short of 400 miles in total, and my arse is not hurting yet :aidan

Here are some pics:

GS or GSA? Nice bike the one in the front :thumb

Nice pictures Nico, I must set up a hosting so I can share mine!

Went out green lane riding last night. All dry stuff but plenty of dirt. Managed a small fording as well nearby, bike was surprisingly manageable. May have to get with the local TRF and update my knowledge of the local RUPPs or are they one called BOATs? Really enjoying the bike now!

Thanks for the help.

Congrats on the bike - enjoy.

The thread was building nicely - lots of different views on which is better and why.

siwhite summed it up ( simplified it ) rather well I thought "Buy the one you prefer after a test ride and after you've drunk a coffee staring at the two bikes sitting next to each other."

Did you test ride both and if so what were your thoughts ?

Yes I rode both over the last few months but test drives are not long enough to really understand what these bikes are about.
Since I sold the FJR and Deluxe, I have ridden the VMAX1700, VROD, Ultra Classic, Super Tenere, Multistrada, K1600, GS and GSA.
For me I decided the GS/GSA fit my wants, and of that the GSA had more tick's out of the box. Yes i could of modded a GS but then you have the gearing advantage of the ADV. small as it may seem it really was the deciding factor.

I liked the GS was lighter and the classic looks. On the GSA I liked the better first gear, improved ground clearance, steeper steering, and better range.

Now that I've ridden it a while I really like the better weather protection the bigger tank gives. But the added weight of full fuel and higher ground clearance makes it trickier to paddle around.

I got a chance to go to the office on Friday which is 220miles round trip. I really like the flat saddle on the GSA as well. Let's you move around to chage positions easier.

Overall really glad I went with the ADV....

Oh and Nico, Grey may be faster but Sandrover sounds cool!
