Brilliant, thanks for your time and advice.

The insurance companies swung it for the GS - I pick her up tomorrow at 15:00~ already has panniers, top box, remus can.

I think I'll need a tankbag plus a Kane Pilot thingy for my travels around the UK.

Well done 'dogfm' :thumb, you won't regret it I promise :D , first things first though, now your a GS rider you'll need to be a :ukgser sponser :thumb. Just click on the link on the top of the page and send Paul £10 and then be amazed at what you can find out and do on this EXCELLENT forum!

I had a 1999 VFR800 FIX. I bought it from new to replace a very unreliable early Triumph T595. The only thing I liked about the VFR I decided after owning it for a couple of years was that it was reliable, otherwise it was bland and had no soul. I also did'nt find it particularly comfy either. I replaced that with an Aprilia RSV Mille which was superb, and far comfier than the VFR, and it certainly wasn't bland! I fancied a change, so in Nov 2003 I bought my RSV Adv to replace the Mille. I would not buy a VFR800 at all, the only VFR I'd like is either an RC45 or one of the late VFR750's which having ridden one back to back with the 800 are IMHO a far better motorcycle.:moped:

I've picked up the GS, rode the long way home and arrived home with a stupid grin

:D

My daughters (9 and 7) had a sit on her and gave the throttle a bit of a twisting- plenty of noise, they loved it- the latest acquisition has their vote over the K1

Only one question, the screen is set in its mid-position at the moment, at 5' 8" what do you reckon the best position is?

Thanks for all your advice- I've taken the correct decision.

Cheers

Rob

You stupid fool, thats just the start -- Tobers will sort out your screen prob, then its all down hill from there ££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££ :D

I had a VFR800 for three years. With a pipe the motor made a brilliant sound, and it was not bad two-up for something that sporty. If you're into track days, or like to really accelerate fast, the Honda is much better than the GS. I also disagree about the GS being better around town. The Honda is a lot more nimble for darting through traffic, and with the wet clutch there's no worry about wear and tear, the way there is on the GS's dry unit.

That said, I sold the VFR and kept the GS, because the GS is just so much more comfy on long trips due to the upright position and leg room -- especially if you mount highway pegs on the cylinder heads. It's much better two-up, at least so says my pillion. It can also haul much more than the Honda, allowing me to go two-up camping for weeks on end. The bottom-end torque is nice as well. On the VFR you have to drop a cog to get decent power at 60mph (though at 90mph it's a different story altogether) :nige

For gods sake dont't get a vfr!!
I know the members of this board are biased but the latest vtec is a gutless turd in comparison to the previous gear cam models, infact the only thing that it does have in it's favor is a set of blinding lights that put the stock gs to shame.
Check out the vfr owners site for a looong list of faults from hondas supposed techno flagship.
Oh.. and the engine DOES have to come out for the valve check at 16000 miles.
I can't believe i cancelled my order for a gs for that pile of shite...

What a load of bollocks!!!:P

The current Vtec VFR isn't gutless compared to the previous model, it makes the same sort of torque but it's done using different technology.

And you do NOT have to take the engine out to do a 16,000 valve check. The owners site does have a lits of faults, on the 1st ones (2002 models) which have since been addressed in later models. www.hondavfrclub.org is the site.

Sorry Paul but you don't know your facts.

However, as Twinrider has said, the GS is a better bike for long haul heavy load touring than the VFR if you're staying away from motorways.

Hey Muppet. One and the same on the VFR forum, right?

I had a 98 Fix and an 02 Vtec ABS and both there absolute gems in their own right. I did chop in the vtec yesterday for a GS but my reasons are varied. I bought the GS because I intend having a lot of fun on it, doing a fair amount of varied touring from Morocco, down to The Med, the Baltics/Russia, blah blah. ie a bike that does it all. BUT, the VFR is an awsome bike and for adrenalin, reliability, comfort and distance munching it was superb. And yes I did enjoy the vtec and would encourage someone to buy one if they wanted good reccomendations. I liked the speed to much and had to slow down - a couple of deaths last year on ride outs put an end to my glory days.

I'm not helping anyone who wants to know which is better (& I've only just got my GS). They're both belters.

Mr Belgian John. what exhaust system have you got fitted to your GS in the picture you posted . Ta

VFR 's are bland bland bland

but if your a old boring duffer a silver GS will suit just fine :D

if you have any life left in you you will choose a Black adventure .

Maybe there is somthing i should explain about my post. Iv'e had 3 vfrs and the gear cam models were blinders, and i too was a v four fanatic, and for me, honda could do no wrong. Then came the vtec which i thought was going to carry on the lineage. It didn't. The styling was sublime, the controls were perfect and the lights were dazzling (pay attention bmw).
But, as soon as i ran it in i realised it wasn't as enjoyable as the previous models and that the vtec was just an annoying gimmick and then it developed a
raft of problems (stalling at low revs, idling
at 4500 rpm etc etc) all of which are well documented on worldwide vfr sites.
Honda wern't interested in my complaints, dealer service was shite so i chopped it in and lost 2 grand in the process.
Still, could have been worse. I could have
had a pan stx....

VFR's are not bland - or at least the gear driven cam versions aren't.

I changed from a VFR800FiY, which I loved, to a VTEC at the end of April last year and was bitterly disappointed. They've engineered all the character out of the bike and the VTEC system is a waste of time. The old engine is torquier and more powerful.

After 4 months and 6000 miles I sold it to a mate and was going to buy a GS1150, but couldn't afford one.

So I bought the Italian version instead - an Aprilia Caponord. Great bike for long distance touring, but the vague handling at v.high speeds and lack of local dealers is a bit worrying :( I've also got an old VFR750 as a winter hack.

At least I'm not the only VFR to big trailie convert; there are several VFR Club members on this forum already and out of a party of 41 I'm taking to Austria with in May, there will be 2 GS's, a Caponord and a Tiger.

Got a lovely '99 VFR for sale with only 8K miles on the clock and full Krauser luggage less than a year old ? ...... but have to say, have just bought an 1150GS!
