GS spoked wheels for a GSA?

Hi,

I've been offered some spoked wheels off of a GS1200 for my GSA at a good price. I always thought that GS' had cast wheels rather than spoked so I am intrigued.

Will wheels that come off a GS fit straight on my GSA? Both are ABS.

There is a thread about fitting RT wheels for quicker handling and wider back tyre. IIRC that also needs the RT rear swing arm to get the correct offset, etc, etc.

I have Mk1 GS wheels on my Mk2 GSA. They weigh the same as the wires but are easier to clean (when I bother see below) and drop straight on. Ideally get them with discs etc so you can swap without too much faffing about.

Mine had bubbling paint so had them chemical dipped and powder coated in gloss black. If you go that way, don't let the coaters attempt to grit blast the paint - its far too hard and the underlying metal will get gouged.

But just to be clear - the wheels being offered to me are off a GS and are spoked ones (not cast ones).

Spoked wheels were/are available as an option on a standard 1200 GS. Will fit same year GSA.

Sorry for any confusion, I call the other type "wire wheels". But basically, all Hexhead GS and GSA wheels are interchangeable.

My Mk1 front wheel with discs and dropped straight onto my Mk2 forks. The rear needs the correct length wheel bolts. Alloys have longer bolts than wires.

Thought the wires had longer bolts? Not measured so don't know. Wunderlich list a locking wheel bolt but only for alloys, if the alloys are longer I guess I could just cut the bolt down to fit the wires then?

They are longer and get a new set of wheel bolts. They aren't a kings ransom and i don't know but cutting them down can't do them much good.

Why do you need a locking wheel bolt?

A locking wheel bolt would be useful to delay them nicking my wheel. It may be safe where you live but after 2 burglaries and two vehicle break ins on my drive I'd rather take some kind of precaution!

The reasoning for my 'spare set of wheels' is to have a different brand/type of tyres at the ready for certain trips I have planned. For predominantly road trips, PR4s are hard to beat - however if there is some off road trips I want to do, I need something with more grips - Anakees2/3s or TKC70/80s

As for cost - ive seen sets of wheels/tyres/discs go for 600-800 quid. I managed to get my wheels somewhat cheaper.

I have Mk1 GS wheels on my Mk2 GSA.

If you're referring to the wheels fitted to that GS with the shotgun Akrapovič exhaust cans, in the pic, then they're actually from a 2008 to 2011 model-year R1200 GS.

The first iteration of alloy wheels fitted to the 2004 to 2007 model-year GS had the double 5 spoke design and are reputed to be considerably lighter than the later wheels.

I stand corrected - thought mine were the older design. They are pretty much pound for pound the same weight as the wire spoke wheels.
Alloys are a lot less costly than wires probably 50% or less. which is why I put my wires in the garage.
The wires hubs do corrode around spoke holes. Stainless spokes react with the aluminium alloy hub.

I certainly noticed no handling difference at all when I went to alloys from wires, but as folks have said, said mine are the newer heavier type. Another time I'd consider RS or RT wheels with the appropriate swing arm then I could run road rubber in more easily available sizes. The downside would be a lot more hassle when switching back to GS wire wheels.

GS / GSA wheels are interchangeable. Different bolts needed for the rear but cannot remember if need longer or shorter ones; but no matter as readily available from BMW.
