GS Tank Bag - no replacement Sticky strips anymore....

I've been using the same BMW Tank bag for the last few years on a '06 GS; '06 GSA and '09 GSA. I've just picked up a '10 GSA today and been told that the little 'velcro' strip, that I used to buy each time I swapped bikes, was no longer available. It used to be around a fiver and is the bottom item in the picture below.

The item that IS now available comes as two smaller strips of 3M velcro.

My problem is that the 'velcro' on the original strip was a very firm - almost like a childs stickle-brick (not sure why I had to indicate it was a childs....but there you go). The 'new' strips are crappy velcro.

So.......I've removed the 'used' sticky bit that was on the bottom strip in the picture and my question is whether anyone knows where I can get some replacement 'sticky' tape that will be as effective as previously supplied ?

Flipper, does the previous years tank bag fit a 2010 bike! ive just brought a 2010 gs and im looking around for a tank bag ive seen some cheap 08-09 but ones listed for 2010 are not discounted.

I think you will find that the fitting on the older bags is different, it bolts on, and it does not fit the new tank, its too wide, i bought an older bag for my 2010 at a good price, BUMW will supply the new fitting for £15 for the 2010 so it can still work out cheaper

My TT tank bag requires two velcro tabs, the stuff they supplied soon peeled off so I got some heavy duty stuff from B&Q. Better than the original stuff by far ....

For fecks sake its just plain old velcro that you can buy in a multitude of places, why anybody would pay BMW prices for a special 'part' is beyond me.

Go to BOYES or any art/crafts hobby shop and get a strip of strong bond stuff for around a quid, mines been on the bike a year and still stuck fast

The part that doesnt fit the new tanks isnt the sticky stuff, the old tank bag s had a metal bolt on part (zip end by the seat) this doesnt fit the new 2010 models, BMW have changed the fitting this end to a hook system similar to that at the headstock end.
So as far as i can see unless you purchase this part the old type bag doesnt fit the 2010 model

I'm definately interesting in the does it fit aspect of this thread though... reading the above it sounds like there have been a few generation of the BMW tank bag.

I've got one of the original 06 ones that initially had the velcro pads that you describe, but I did away with that and modified the fitting as I didnt want to be sticking anything to my lovely bike.

Looking at the 2010 bikes, it looks like the only thing that wouldnt allow the to fit perfectly is the fact that I think the bars bend in to make a slightly narrower space at the front of the tank - its only obvious on full lock - I still need to look under the seat to work out where to attach the half zip end, but has anyone else discovered anything else to consider when using one of the old tank bags?

Its the old BMW boll*x I'm afraid. No - it doesnt fit 'officially'....but then 'unofficially' I've fitted a 2006 tank bag to my 2010 GSA and have been using it the last 4weeks without a problem.

I did have a problem originally using the 'no-nails' tape from your local B&Q but then I was an idiot and didnt pay attention to the 'dont fit tape below 10degrees'. I was fitting when we were having the -10 spell....doh. However - now the weather is better I've refitted - using two layers of tape and it works fine. I'll refit shortly as I need to lower the position of the pad. It works fine though - I've been carrying sport kit etc and had no issues.

I understand the 2010 bag fits both at the front and at the back with a 'clasp' which has gotta be more secure but I've had no problems using a 2006 bag with this 2010 GSA, a 2009 GSA and a 2008 GSA.........
