gs just back from stupidly expensive 36k service: had throttle cable replaced by competent local mechanic but....seems since the new one was fitted, im suffering the ability to spin the back wheel in all gears as i accelerate. also, at idle its developed a flat spot which has caught me out twice at junctions......so. local mechanic is happy to rectify the problem but I had hoped someone here can give me more details as to what the problem is so he can do a good job sorting it out.

your help definately needed.............

Stupidly expensive 36K service......

So robeekay67, who did this 'stupidly expensive service' then?
If it was a genuine dealer and they did not notice that the throttle cable was in need of replacement, you should go back and complain.

If your 'competent' local mechanic only fitted the cable what was the bike like before he did the replacement?

If your local 'competent' mechanic needs help with this type of engine then I'm afraid your using the wrong person, no offense but come on these things are not rocket science.

Here are some tips:

1 Both throttle bodies need to be balanced (bloody good vacuum gauges, Twinmax or Carbtune) and some one that knows what they are about. See 2 below.

2 The balancing act means both throttle plates and then idle by-pass screws are adjusted to give the smoothest engine response and performance.

3 Valve clearances can affect the engine if too tight or loosely set.

There is much more that could be added but at the risk of souding unhelpful (which is NOT intended) there are countless references to this process on this site, investigate and enjoy.

Additionally your bike should not have been released to you in such a poor state of engine performance, it must not have been road tested after the work was done...an important fact.:)

mr mechanic..many many thanks for your help! im not going to mention which dealership i went to just yet as Ive sent a very naughty letter to them asking for an answer why amoungst other things my front and rear brake pads were shot and not changed........

as for my local guy; i can't knock him, hes very open to learning the gs and warned me it would possibly need adjusting and if i come across any tips, he'd apply them. end of the day, im quickly realising that people who specialise in servicing and servicing only are a world apart and a far better bet than franchised dealerships that have more interest in jobbing new bikes out.

in all, my experiences of bmw servicing are poor. ive done several dealers and they are all the same......i think the reason they arent up to the job is cos the people who work there are PAYE, and not well paid at that. if you go to someone who owns their own business, their passion and attention to detail is there to be seen in their work!!

once again, thanks for your tips!!
ps..dealer will be named and shamed if he doesnt respond very , very soon......
