Hang on a minute with the prices.
My dad traded a 6 month old GSA for a GS12 same spec that was 6 month old 3000m on the GSA & lost £3000 against the 12

I traded my 02R & lost £2500 against the triumph or against a second hand GSA or anything else in the showroom I would have lost £3000
Trading for the triumph Ive stripped the accessories off it & got more money back for them so Im more in pocket.

Im sorry but in my experience the old tale of bmw hold there money better than anything else is rubbish you will loose the same as any other make of bike.

I would have bought a GS if the price was right but Im sorry it wasnt & Im noit looking to get any one wound over the GS/tiger debate cause ive already told u my opinion & thats all it is my OWN OPINION
Its the same as any bike there is faults with all of them its just some people will not have a bad word said against their own brand.

You pays yer money you takes your choice

Lets look at the list price of the 12GS and the ADV, without accessories. £8710 against £8815 ( or there or thereabouts). So your dad was happy to take a price of £5800 on a 6 month old Adv against a new 1200? Is he made of money? Or is he mad? I say that having sold a 6 year old 1150, with 40000 miles on the clock, for £4625 in May this year.

I can certainly say that the old tale of BM's holding money is true. The price I got for my 6 year old GS was only a few hundred quid less than what I would have got if I had tried to sell my year old Triumph Sprint ST.

Then stick on abs panniers grips & stuff & thats where the money went so wot about the price difference against my R then?

I cant comment on the finish of the tiger but I will be honest about it when I do know

If you can explain the figures for your R a bit more clearly Malc, then it might be possible to comment. But all you have said is you lost £2500 on it. You didn't mention over what period of time you owned the bike, the price you paid for it or anything else that would help.

02 with 22000miles on I owned 4 2.5 years n loved it I swapped mainly cause I wanted a taller bike n the obdvious advantages.
Like I said it would have been a GS but

But Bob, The BMW starts off at a much higher price so you should expect to pay more second hand. And, as anyone knows, the first year or two are the most expensive for depreciation on ANY vehicle. :mcgun

Yes Howard, the BM's do cost more, but their value in the first 2 years falls at a much slower rate than any Triumph on the market. Triumphs drop like a stone, which is surprising considering they think of themselves as a prestige brand. The market obviously thinks otherwise.

Ah, the old "caught out by too many miles" ploy. That's the trouble with the book value of bikes, it assumes you only do 4000 miles a year.

Bob

I've got to agree with Bob on Triumph quality issues, although I've only had two. My first was a '94 Speed Triple that I bought in '95 and sold earlier this year (bought for £6K, sold for £2K - not bad for 10 years of depreciation!). Not a spot of rust, no flakey paint, no furry alloy. My '01 Tiger (which I traded for the GS Adv after 18 months) did have flakey paint, furry alloy - but no rust as far as I remember. And as Allan said, the Tiger was lighter, much faster and bouncier - but wasn't as 'altogether' as the GS. Although we won't mention the Furry alloy, flakey paint on the GS

Yep the too many miles & the book is useless I must agree4000m per year is no good for a bike like that I was also told that tyhe average miles on aa bike is 3000m per year well it dont count for me I like to ride em.

Like I said though I wont & cant badmouth bmw or GS cause I like em & still do I bought the tiger cause it suited me better than bmw.

Ill let u know how I get on It goes for its first service on tuesday & then I can use more revs thank goodness.

cheers all malc

You should be up to 6000rpm by now Malc, if you are using the Triumph running in procedure. That should be enough for 90mph with the gearing the Tiger has. Or do you need more?? :D

Bob

dont need more really & 6thou is good for 90 but if I can have more Im not complaining.

A well known Triumph/Honda dealer in Edinburgh tried to tell me the average mileage should only be 1000 miles a year for top book price. Of course that only seemed to apply to the bike I wanted to trade in, not the one I wanted to buy.

Allan

Well I rode the GS and liked it so I ordered one, got the luggage system with a fair discount so come the weekend I will be the proud owner of a red/silver 1200GS.
I am going to get a higher more comfy seat as soon as, anyone know the best place to go for seats.

You'll not need any more in general riding. The engine's got plenty of torque low down that it's almost like an automatic. It'll pull well from tickover. That's around 20mph in top gear. However, above 6000rpm it's scalded cat territory!

If I was allowed only one bike I would buy the BMW R1200GS in preference to any other.

I can't comment on the BMW luggage, although I have heard it is flimsy relative to some thrid party luggage. I've had both Touratech and Jesse panniers on my GSs. They are both as strong as each other, but the Jesse luggage is definately better - it's designed to be no wider than the bike (negates the need for collapsible sides), they two panniers hold 100 litres of luggage, and they are easy to open and (lock) close. They are quite expensive though.
