GS triple Black 1200 2016 Shaft needs Replacing

what bearing?... the CV joints in the shaft I'm guessing.. sealed for life...
its not ex-wales demo bike is it?... I bought one a few years back only to find the prop rusted to hell and the full drive rough....

assume its in warranty

Surprisingly the LC shaft and final drive is quite good. Doesn't suffer with the bearing issues on the K flat four engine series, 1100 and 1150 drive train, and to a lesser extend the 1200 hexhead models. I did have an incorrectly assembled final drive fitted after a corrosion claim. This was of course sorted by the dealer. What raised the suspicion was an unusual noise when I got on the bike and the suspension compressed (I can hear the fat bastard comments, snigger). I asked the dealer to have a look and viola, a new final drive was fitted.

Usually in the past the problem was with overloading the bike or have an unusual load at speed for some distance. Because the BMW is more touring than sport this happened at high mileage but can be anything from 30k onwards. Remember that all that load is transferred through the bearing to the wheel axle at the rear. Add some speed to the conditions and it wears prematurely. This was the case for the K flat four, 1100 and 1150 models (more knowledgeable people can comment about this). The 1200 hexhead just didn't have proper lubrication on the splines and the sealed for life final drive ensured degradation of the oil quality. Thus eventually leading to failures meaning stuck splines or worn out cross couplings or bearing wear. One should be wary of shock loads, submerged in water and high loads at speed on any shaft driven motorcycle. It depends on the design or material spec of how robust it will be but in the end a chain and sprocket arrangement is the best for any off road riding for various reasons. Shaft drive is best suited to touring.

8K ?

dont sound right that.:rob

Maybe a rogue bearing on manufacture,:nenau

I had 80k outa mine before it went, I abused the fuck outa it with clutching it up for wheelies and deep in rivers etc and then it kept going with just the 2 forks of the uj meshing and i discovered it by chance.:bow

I got a 2nd hand one for £50 quid I think, done 55k on that one and its good,10 mins to fit.

any of the hexheads will fit.:thumby:

Sorry misunderstanding ,it was the shaft that needed to be replaced not the bearing... happy days completed under warranty

so why had the shaft gone bad???.. was it the bearings on the shaft?.. the CV joint... what was it doing?
