Hi Guy's

I started asking a thousand questions in the newbie section regarding buying a GSA over a GS?

I'm relying on you to let me know if I really need a GSA. OK I want one but the extra couple of grand cost is significant to me?

I want to do some off road work as well as some touring. Hopefully both on big outings! :D

I previously listed the few basic differences that im aware of so need your input :thumb2

differences are as follows

gsa is higher, taller suspension, unit is same as standard just with a taller body

gsa has a lower 1st gear, better for some things

gsa has bigger fuel tank, 22lts vs 31 lts

some come with slightly different seat (single unit) and not as good for pillion

comes with some goodies like crash guards extra lights, etc etc

has plastic bits added

add on performance bits, dont add performance, usually make fuel economy worse, and louder.

Thanks Harry,

No you mention it I remember reading about the lower first gear on the GSA. In a few places I have read about people battering clutch's off-road so I guess it could come in handy? The ground clearence surely cant be a bad thing though???

Fuel range is always a bonus especially given the cost of the Touratech 42 litre version!!! :(

So who recons a GS will perform off road as well as a GSA???

Point taken about the performance Parts though Harry... Although of course every GS owner wants the HID lamps!!! It has to help the road work!?

simple question. How tall and heavy are you?

I'm 5' 8" (around 13 stone) and had an 1150GSA with 20mm lower shocks (front and back) and a lower Sargent saddle. Spent thousands trying to make a too big bike fit me.

Never worked and I had to sell the GSA. I now have an 1100GS (same height and around the same weight) and I'm delighted. This bike far suits me over the GSA.

I've also bought the tank from an 1150GSA which will fit straight on for when I want that extra range.

again correct, the best upgrades you can do to any GS is

suspension
Lights
service

as a point, dont discount the 1100, they are the real GS to have,:thumb2
many have come back to them from 1150's and 1200's

now thats the kinda reply I was looking for!!! :) Thanks essjay!

In answer to your question im 5' 11" and 17 stone as broad as wide fitted with an average sized beer tank for a biker

I went through a stage of wrestling ZZR1100's round corners and they weigh in at 248kgs although I appreciate the COG is likey to be VERY different compared with the GS. So im used to the weight but take your advice VERY seriously. The points you made were those that I had not condsidered. The weight of picking it up doesnt bother me but dealing with the height, adverse camber in roads or pot holes and uneven ground off road could cause a problem. Especially if riding alone.

Im just gona take a look at the height of the Varaderos as I owned one for a few weeks before selling it to fund a new sports bike.

Simple

GS are for pussies ..

GSA are for tough guys .. (especially if you are under 6ft tall)

:D

Hey bailey, thanks for that thread and I promise I did search before posting my question. ;)

Elevensies... Good point witht he 1100 and thanks!

Indecisive, thanks; I thought that was the case but wasn't sure. Now I think I probably maybe deffinitely may want the GSA unless someone makes me think otherwise..............

Great input guys, seriously; THANKS ;)

Indecisive, have you got any more opinon like that? I need more convincing that I want to wait another five months for find the extra money to buy a GSA??? :thumb

Would that make you a tough pussy? :D:D:D

HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA it means he took a leaf out of Indecisives book! Best of both worlds! I like it.... Although the money involved aint great...

Anyway owning a GS and GSA is sat on the fence :D come on... you only need one and which ever you chose to sell..... :thumb

Hey Bob,

Nice point! I have considered it but in the event of owning a GS and wishing it was a GSA I will only end up spunking more money on upgrades than buying the GSA in the first place.... Although.... I do like your style!! :thumb

Tried to follow that link but I havent paid my 12 quid yet? Does that mean it was one forsale????? :clap

Are we talking about the 1150 or the 1200 models ???

Has anyone noticed an advert on "the worlds largest auction site" for a Salvage GSA, in black? They want £2999 for it but the pics and description make it seem like it was stolen and dumped in a river??? Just about every bit of steel has turned to rust with a smashed screen and mirrors etc? I look at it thinking that stripping down, cleaning back, repainting and rebuilding would be easy... BUT for £3K you can normally pick-up a together and NOT-stollen GS??? Is this what you would call a 'panic buy'?

Re; 1150GSA

1; correct
2;lower 1st was optional (may have become standard on later models...)
3;optional,02 and 03 bikes could be specced with either tank, later models large tank only
4;all came with single seat unit, some may have been swapped for GSlite version by previous owners
5;engine bars optional at first, became standard on later models
6;beak extender
7;subjective,swapping the cat convertor for a y piece will lose a few kg's and gain roughly the same number of horsepower, not to mention smooth out the power delivery and, from memory, have no detrimental effect on mpg

pedant mode now off :augie
