GS vs new Silver 07 RT info?

Has anyone else moved from a Pan to an RT? What was your experience?

I haven't but someone I ride witha lot has. He think the RT is far better, mainly cos he no longer grinds the pegs/stand etc on every corner (something that was a real problem on the Pan). So the RT has better ground clearance, it also has better handling, just a pity it hasn't got the power of a Pan. Not that the Rt is a slouch, it's easily faster than the Pan in anything other than a straight line.
He found the Pan unstable at speed but says the RT is rock steady even two up, fully laden and with large LARGE top box.
So he rates the RT far, far better than the PAN. maybe not as comfy but who buys a bike for comfort?

I cannot see how BMW sell RT's when they have the K1200GT available. The fairing is better, the mirrors are the best on any bike I've ridden, the riding position is better and the performance is stunning for a full-dressed tourer.

I love Boxer's but not enough to prefer the RT to the GT. If you are seriously considering a move away from the GS, try a GT.

I had a GT and went through all that software update palaver. In the end, after 2500 miles, I decided that the bike was truly awful on British roads.

A big motor without a flywheel.....it's hard to explain but it was a difficult bike to live with, especially as I didn't reside permanently on a motorway.

My RT, by comparison, was bliss.

Hi Ben. It's a shame you didn't give it a bit longer. I know mine drove me mad when I first had it but with over 12k on it now it has settled down and I'd never go back to an RT. In the pipeline now is a redesigned seat and airbox and and the 4th software upgrade. At least BMW are trying to ge it right, oh and an offer of some compo for aggro.

I loaned one from Jefferies when the GS was in for some warranty work. It was horrible! It seemed to want to fall over at every stop start junction and mini roundabout. I put it down to all the weight over the front wheel. It went into the garage as soon as I got home and only came out again when I had to take it back.

Having read this thread it seems quite likely that the performance of the bike was being effected by the condition of the front tyre. Which is interesting as until now I thought the bike was just plain bad.

Snap - what a nightmare without doubt a very scary bike to ride. I too was well glad to give it back. Was thinking about swapping my 1150 RT for a 1200 RT but er no thanks I'll keep the best bike BMW ever made AKA 1150RT.

This talk of tyre wear on RTs used to happen on my '951100Rt. The sides of my fronts wore out before the centreline. I used to think it was down to me being a demon on the brakes late into the roundabouts.
Now the GT, despite 150hp available, is wearing its tyres out very evenly both ends. I got 7400miles out of the first set of Z6s and the second are going to make that easily as well despite me not fitting the exact spec tyres. I thought Z6s were Z6s but not so...

Many of the very powerful & fast superbikes have specific tyre fitments, they usually involve a different carcas construction that responds better under high speed use, big power delivery and heavy breaking. They don't necessarily last any longer but they do give better handling and really should be used but they aren't always easy to get.

Pikey - I have found this to be so but only with the OE Metzelers. I changed my R1150RT to Bridgestone B020s and haven't had this problem since.

I just went down my long term tyre dealer (Chris Watts) who I've got tyres off for years. (even 2nd hand ones when money was tight) and got these Z6s ordered. No mention in owners manual of special fitment. I needed a C or K or some other fuckin letter to denote a Z6 specific to the K1200S/R/Gt.
Anyway these tyres are staying on the bike till they're fucked. All I've experienced is a slight weave like what you would get on an old K100RT at 100mph so it like a trip back in time. I just bunged an extra 2psi in the carcasses to keep them in shape and dialled the suspension up to 11!

The Continental Road Attacks should be a C fitting (and based on experience they are better) but Conti say that the RT is right on the cusp so fitting the non C type is fine (but they do wear funny!).

Hello there..

I'm a bit late to the party with this thread. But anyway, I went from a 1200GS to a 1200RT in June last year. I was very fond of the GS but have to say I have really loved the RT, much more so than the GS. I find it as much fun and as involving as the GS with a few more home comforts so to speak. I don't off road so that wasn't an issue for me.

I should imagine I'm pretty young for an RT rider, but I really couldn't give a stuff about what other folks reckon.

Get a test ride and enjoy! Good luck.. :)

Ciao
Roberto
