As the season is due to start I have been looking at buying a GS, when I came across the 04 Triumph Tiger for £7k you get heated Grips, Full Hard Luggage, Centre Stand etc, I only need to pay for an alarm or I might get it thrown in.

I just can't decide, you can only get a 2nd hand GS 30k miler for that kind of money OK depreciation may be a small issue but hay I am keen to keep the bike for 3 years and I intend to use it.

Triumph are offering more of a realistic trade in on my 02 Aprilia Mille R to, BMW just ring a local trader who only wants the bike if its cheap so I am getting offers of £1000 below book price  I know I could sell it privately for £6500-6900 but to get an offer of £5500 is a bloody insult IMOP especially when it goes on sale on the dealers forecourt for £7200-7500, I don’t begrudge any body a profit but that’s taking the p155

So I may go down that route as it appears more value for the money, & I do like the sounds of a triple:D

I have not ridden a Tiger but I hear it’s a real hoot.

Any ex owners or chaps in the know think I am mad:rolleyes:

No way... I bought a 2nd hand beautiful black 'un 51 reg with 6000 miles on, heated grips, hand protectors, H+B bars, top box, and feet deflectors.... less than you quote and from from dealer.

I've had a Tiger and a Sprint ST. I guarantee if you buy the Tiger, it will only be a prelude to the GS. The Tiger is great, but just not as good as the GS. You'll always look at a GS and think "I should have bought the GS..."

The finish is an issue too, I rode the Tiger through the winter and it looked 10 years old. I'm riding the GS every day at the moment, hose it down and oil it every week and it looks great.

There's a few nice GS's for sale on this site dip your hand a tiny bit deeper in your pocket and have your motorcycling desires satiated! :D

Cheers.

Ben.

I keep thinking that to myself too - test rode the R1100GS about 5 years ago, loved it, couldn't afford it, so bought an R850R (yawn) in an attempt to slow down. I got my only speeding ticket ever on that bike..............

Bought a VFR800FiX (loved that), tried to find a nice GS after a couple of years/20000 miles, but ended up buying a VFR800VTEC (too uncomfy).

Kept that for 4 months/6000 miles and almost bought a fully-equipped 1150GS, but couldn't justify the £1500 cost to change, so I swapped the VTEC for a new Caponord.

Nice bike and much quicker than a GS, but it doesn't have the low down grunt and rufty-tufty offroad looks of a GS.

One day I'll buy one.........probably a 1200GS

GS Vs Tiger

I agree,that's what I thought,made the swap after a year (Tiger 955i to 1150Adventure) the 955 is a peach of a motor-sounds and goes well with a Remus:D
But build quality is poor and the Tiger loses money like a gambler in vegas

Dig deeper and buy the GS it's the real deal;)

I had the same dilema, being a fan of Triumph (the early bikes had great build quality) I test rode a Sprint ST , smooth, V Fast, awesome brakes but to bland and cramped for me, next an 885efi Tiger nice handled well, but again bland. Then a Caponord best thing I can say about it, was it had nice blue lit instruments.
Completley gutless at low revs. Then came a R1100GS this was more like it , not perfect, it buzzes, has silly switchgear (IMO) lacked grunt compared to my 1200 Trophy but it had so much character. I then tried a 955i Tiger which was bloody fast but again smooth and bland. I personaly blame the new exhuast systems strangling the noise of bikes. But withing 20 feet of riding off on the 955 Tiger i thought I prefered the GS. Especially with its more "free breathing" exhuast :D

So I bought a R1100GS, still miss the grunt of my 1200 Trophy, but im learning you need to drop a gear for extra oomph on the GS but the handling makes up for that.

Its so different to anything else, and so are most of the guys that ride them, there not your sterotypical BMW rider nor are they sterotypical bikers.

BTW you might find we're a bit biased on this forum :D

And if you join the Yahoo Tiger Group you'll find there the biggest bunch of anal retentives youve ever met.

My tuppence worth

its this easy

Tiger....tubed tyres. No problem until your on the side of the road at night in the rain or in some cold mud somewhere. Man i hate patching tubes.

GS...tubless. 5 mins plug job.

Cant say I've met any, every message is moderated on the Tiger group try posting a non Tiger related post and it will get sent straight back.

I have to admit I have a very soft spot for any Triumph because its British and as they sound wonderful. I've had a shot on an early Sprint and couldn't fault it. The New Tiger comes with all the luggage for a bargain price and looks the biz. Just go to the Alps and see how the Germans love them.

If I didn't like the GS so much I would be riding a Tiger by now.

HAve Fun

AndyT:cool:

Andy Thanks for that, I like you love the GS but I feel I must try the other bike because its such a bargain and even though depreciation is a lot worse I intend to keep this bike for a bit longer than I normally do.

And in Black they do look the business.

If I can get a good deal on a GS then I will go with that, but as I said BMW find it hard to trade non BMW bikes on than most dealers because they don't sell many other makes from there forecourts and the Traders mostly offer them bottom book.

You want to come up North Of the Border http://www.motorradcentral.com/

Always have a selection of "other" makes in their showroom.

Alternatively pay a foot passenger fare on the fastferry Belfast Motorrad showroom stuffed with other makes only too keen to take yours in for a BM sale, and very willing to search for one at the right price.......

Did n't realise they did not have a website, I'm that used with just calling up. Try 02890848466 Jim Hill is the boss there a good lad, I know it is hit and miss but there are always GS's coming in but mind you they seem to be going out the same day. The last day I was up a chap was leaving his 02 adventure in for a twin spark Adv. Another guy bought the 02 in little under a 1/2 hour. my 97 1100 was sold even before I got it too the shop. Good luck and by the way last I know there was an immaculate black 03 Tiger sitting there it had been traded in for a GS.

Cheers SCHWARZ
