Evening all,
My 2008 (58) GS is currently in for service at 3300 miles. Due on time, not miles and it will be it's first 'major'.
I took photographs in advance and took them to the dealer of a few fasteners, rear wheel spokes and rear brake disc bolts showing signs of corrosion. When I dropped off the bike I pointed out the corrosive parts to the service controller as an addition to the photographs.
Anyway, cut a long story very short....
A week later, no call from dealer, so I called to be told service is complete but no warranty issues have been dealt with....
I asked 'why have the bike a week without any attempt to conduct warranty work?'
They said they were waiting for BMW to authorise work....what!! a week later...
Anyone else had similar problems with dealer or BMW??
Anyone had any luck with corrosive parts being rectified on warranty

If the bike had done 23000 miles I'd accept a few signs of corrosion, but at 3300 miles and a bike thats 18 months old I don't think they have a case to refuse the work, or do they?

Pretty pi**ed off with dealer for lack of communication/urgency (not naming them but there in the East Mids)
and...BMW for their delayed response for what I see as a genuine warranty claim...

Your thoughts guys...(keep em' clean!!!)

I think you'll struggle to get 18 month old fastners and bolts changed on a warranty claim. Huge chunks of peeling enamel paint off the drive shaft maybe, but a corrosion claim has to be pretty severe to get it ratified... :thumb

warranty claim

I have just had a load of grief off a landrover dealer about warranty work so I phoned landrover warrany my self and got it sorted, you have paid your money for the warranty so use it, but dont just leave it go, if you still have no joy get trading standards involved.good luck they may ask what you clean the bike with so do your home work first (I always use the bike cleaner I bought from the dealer):thumb

Thanks...

Andyshooter,
Thanks for that mate.

Have contacted BMW customer service this morning and are awaiting a response.

I'll update you when I hear back from them...

Don't hold your breath:augie It could have been living outside for 18 months or only ridden in the winter as far as BuMW know.

I bet you a pound to a pinch of shit that they say it hasn't been washed properly and then you are screwed so be prepared. Anyway, rusty bolts is hardly a top of the tree important warranty claim.

All fasteners will eventually corrode so my advice would be to get a stainless steel bolt kit from Steptoe and replace them. Bingo, shiney nuts and hours of happy motoring:thumb

Warranty Pah

basically sod warranty, the goods must be fit for purpose - Sale of Goods Act. Which extends up to six years.

Section 14 applies

(2A) For the purposes of this Act, goods are of satisfactory quality if they meet the standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory, taking account of any description of the goods, the price (if relevant) and all the other relevant circumstances.

(2B) For the purposes of this Act, the quality of goods includes their state and condition and the following (among others) are in appropriate cases aspects of the quality of goods—

(a) fitness for all the purposes for which goods of the kind in question are commonly supplied,

(b) appearance and finish,

(c) freedom from minor defects,

(d) safety, and

(e) durability.

I had to use this when the bike was 2.5 years old and the aluminium lacquer started to peel. Got a good result with the engine casings being replaced by BMW. Have to say the chap I dealt with at BMW UK was excellent. As was the evidence on this site of others suffering the same problem.

Good job on getting the work done and was it the front engine casing? They normally replace this without too much hassle. If it was anything else, you were very lucky indeed.

Quoting the fit for purpose line normally just antagonises the shit out of everyone involved as it doesn't really apply to most things. I mean, just because some bolts, fasteners and engine casings go rusty it doesn't mean they aren't fit for purpose.
