The font and back wheels and spoke's on my 1100GS have seen better days.

Can anyone tell me whether I can get them re-spked with stainless spokes, and are they strong enough? (Leaving for RTW next may.)

Or am I going to have to raid the piggy bank for a set of new rims?

Thanks in advance.

s/s spokes will be strong enough, but your problem will be finding somebody skilled enough to do it who won't charge the earth. There are lots of people out there who might say they can, but re-spoking a wheel off a GS is extremely difficult. I used to re-spoke all my own bicycle wheels but I wouldn't dream of trying to do a GS wheel even with the necessary tools and equipment.
You might already have somebody in mind (ask to speak to a satisfied customer) but I reckon your best bet is 2nd hand. It's a peace of mind thing.

s/s spokes

simon,
there was guy who was at the bmf who had a yellow 1150 and he had his wheels anodised black i think, and also fitted with s/s spokes and they looked the b****cks ,so it can be done, sorry i don't know his name but i do remember him saying that he had 12 bikes so there can't be that many people in the club with same luck as him, like simon said I thought these wheels could not be rebuilt by hand, but they can it seems you just have to track the wheel builder down, you could start a thread titled
WILL THE GUY WITH 12 BIKES PLEASE COME FORWARD i'm sure he was from down south. Andy

hagon just laughed !!!

I enquiered at the bike show on the hagon stand ,and yes your right in one part of your answer they will rebuild any wheel but when you say that magic word IV'E GOT A GS, they just laughed in my face, phone and see it might of changed but I doubt it.Andy

Theres a chap in Leicester, Bob Warner, who rebuilds just about anything. He's just rebuilt my 76 daytona wheels with flanged ally rims and stainless spokes for £340. A friend of mine has recently had his Jaguar MkIIs spoked wheels rebuilt there when nobody else would touch them for less than funny money. I'll go and see him about GS wheels and post his response later in the week.

Hagon's rebuilt the wheels on my old 1100GS back in 1997 when the spokes were replaced due to rusting, so it seems strange that they don;t appear to be touching GS wheels these days.

I appologise

sorry but it was not HAGON but CENTRAL WHEEL COMPONENTS that would not touch GS wheels I think they were too busy building supamoto wheels at the time, so HAGON do build them!!

Further to the Bob Warner enquiry for Wheel rebuilding in Leicester.

yesterday I took my GS to Bob Warners, to ask about respoking, I was informed that he could respoke the wheels without any problem, the standard charge of £15 for each wheel still applies, there were only two problems:-

1/ he did not know if he could get the nipples for the spokes and would need a serious enquiry to look into it. If I were to supply the spokes, or at least get the nipples from BMW, It would be straight forward.

2/ the front wheel for the GS presents no problem, however, the rear does because he has no way of mounting the wheel in order to lace it and true the wheel. If I could mount an old bevel drive on a bracket it would be no problem.

I presume the lack of mounting jigs for the rear wheel will be the reason other wheel rebuilders will not touch GS wheels.

I did enquire about Stainless spokes. They are, apparently, not as strong as steel spokes and are fitted at your own risk!
Several years ago I had a spoked wheel Laverda 3C rear wheel relaced with stainless spokes. Within a thousand miles 3 spokes had broken. The 3C had similar weight and BHP to the GS so it's worth bearing in mind.

Greetings, I am trying to identify how I can lace a 21" front wheel on an R11 GS. Does anyone have any experiance here with this?

A friend of mine was looking into doing that and I was mildly interested myself.

Two problems are there:- 1. the original hub has the spokes coming out and the radius is designed to operate with a 19" rim and the spokes come out at a slightly different angle.

2: the suspension in the form of the telelever would run extremely close and not allow a knobbie tyre of any decent shape to be fitted and still allow enough room for mud to go around.

As the fitting of a 21" wheel is usually for serious dirt stuff I couldn't see the point.

I've used the TKC80 tyres to great advantage in all kinds of terrain on the standard front rim.

Mick.
