Having recently acquired a 2003 BMW GS1150 Adventure, I'm finding that due to my 'challenged' inside leg measurements I keep walloping the aluminium cases with my right boot every time I embark and disembark.

Even with a low seat conversion (probably makes it worse ?) I'm struggling.

Also, my pillion struggles to get on/off too with the ally panniers and found the mounting rings tend to poke into the thigh if you see what I mean.

Without being a total philistine, can I ask if anyone else has this problem and whether anyone has modded an Adv back to the standard System cases ?

Thanks.

My ADV came with System Panniers on it and I have swopped them for the Aluminium ones. They fit fine and look okay if you prefer a less LWR clone image I suppose. Obviously I wasn't keen as I took mine off ;)

What no 'Alex B can't get his leg-over' jokes?

Ah well - I've found that the only way of mounting my beast is to stand facing the seat ... but a little back; kick right leg straight up and rest it on the seat and the hop forward and swivel on to the seat. Getting of is the reverse of this.

Looks kind of funny ... but works for me! And no knocking of my (easily marked) bmw alu panniers!

PS. I've got a 29in leg and the lower seat on my 1150. Maybe not over short.

I was expecting the "leg over" humour but thankfully nothing so far !!

Good tip !

Alex. Removed my aluminium case and used Systems over summer.

You will need to buy the System rails to hang the cases on but all 3 mounting points either side are the same. Only the bolts are a little longer to compensate for the spacers attached to the rear rail monting points.

Changing from System to Aluminium requires you purchase new rear footrests as fitted to your bike (the frame work for the Aluminium fits into grooves on the new foot rest . I assume therefore given that systems do not have such frame work, you will not have to purchase new ones. The job will take you 10/15 mins.

Oh go on then you,ve talked me into it. I'll swop my system boxes for your Ali ones :mmmm

Yep..........

Johnny,

Thanks for the pics ....... very helpful. Did you have a similar issue as I'm having ....... kicking the alum boxes every time you get on/off ?

Guys ...... thanks for all these replies; very helpful. And thanks for offering me your System cases in exchange for my aluminium ones. I am overcome and will give it some careful thought.

I also have the alum topbox (plus fittings of course) and am very impressed with its build quality and functionality. In fact, all the alum boxes are (ironically) much nicer products than the System cases.

Hey Johnny, What make is you seat? is it standard height? How do you rate it?

Thanks

Mermoto

Let me help.

A) Corbin
B) Lower but wider therefore slightly more leg stretch over standard.
C) Yes he loves it, more than any other seat he has had. It is the only accessory to move through the 3 1150GS's he's owned.

Glad to help :thumb

Seconded...............

Rider's seat covering is shagged now(vinyl now split), after 3500 miles to Slovenia in last 2 weeks (but it's done 70,000 miles overall)

So I'll have to get it recovered over winter :D

Thanks Johnny and Judge, it looks very comfortable. How did you fit it as the corbin site shows its only suitable for the standard 1150GS? or do they make a version for the Adventure?

Mermoto

I decided instantly on the BMW System Cases when I bought my GS Adventures as I really didn't want that HUMMER look.

The mounting kit includes both mounting rails, spacers and fasteners.
BMW part number: 71-60-2-316-727

I mounted a GiVi Maxia E52 top case onto a self made stainless steel rack using the GiVi case mounting hardware. You do have to lift your leg when the top case is in place.

The whole set-up looks like...

2 seat conversion to my Adv, but they also do a single seat Adv version
