GS1150 gearbox/final drive oil question

Hi everyone
Just a quick one from the newbie me
I just got some Castrol EP80W-90 SAE 80-90,API GL4
for the gearbox and final drive.
Is this a correct lubricant for my 1150GS single spark.

I think you want GL5... it won't froth up as it is for high speed usage... I'll just go check.

Yes... do not use GL4, you want GL5. Should be about 9 quid per litre bottle from halfrauds!

the onelu gl5 i found was Castrol Differential EPX 80W-90 1L

I think that's what I use....gearbox and transmission oil. If it is GL5 and the correct SAE... go for it!

GL5 only - this is very important.

The Halfords 80w90 GL5 is fine - it doesn't matter what they call it as long as it's the right grade and viscosity.

Haynes manual states GL5. Bought a litre of Castrol EPX 80W-90 for £9.99 and it says GL5 on the bottle. Good enough for me although Fairy Liquid sounds a reasonable alternative as you won't need as much

Yep, GL5 it is. I use Comma stuff as there is a range locally (approx £7 a litre), but i have used the EPX GL5 amongst others. Even the K range needed GL5 so BMW haven't used GL4 for many a moon.

Replacing mine this weekend. Motorworks recommended Castrol EPX 80W90. Motorworks part number: OIA11019; £7.05 per ltr

Just pop down to your local car spares shop and get some EP90 or EP 80/90 GL5 - it's what's specified and perfect for 1100/1150 GS's, and will cost about £10 for 5 litres.

Don't think paying anything more on some special oil will endow your gearbox with a miraculous gear changing procedure or an extra long life.

I've come to the conclusion that there aint nothin that's going to make my 1100 change like a miraculous slick thing.

Seems a bit odd to me some of you lot saying "I bought a litre of...."

Its usual to change the gearbox oil at the same time as the FD.. and in my experience a litre isn''t quite enough to do both jobs.

75w-140 fully synthetic made an appreciable difference to mine (the surplus going in the FD).

However, if they can contain their apoplectic rage, the oil police will probably now post that I'm wasting money and that my gearbox will explode
