Just in time for christmas too :blast

Went out to start the bike today (GS1150 03) and turned the key, didnt notice anything unusual and it would turn over but wouldnt kick ...... took off helmet and out with ear plugs and then noticed when i turned on the ignition the fuel pump would sound as though it was trying to prime but there was a constant crackling noise from the left hand side at the fuel injection at the potentiometer

Recent history: 2 weeks ago the altenator belt snapped and was replaced and since then it has started fine and run as normal apart from 3 days ago when it misfired twice briefly on low throttle bimbling then ran as normal.

I have checked the coil packs wiring and connections and they seem fine (right side replaced 2000 miles ago) .... fuse 3 blew when the alternator belt went and thats been replaced.

Any ideas if its a simple thing like resetting the FI or do i need to keep my xmas money for new expensive bits.

Unfortunately i dont have a garage so any "go and look at ****" suggestions will take time and torch light

TIA and merry xmas :beerjug:

Crackling = sparking / arcing = loose connection somewhere.
LHS also include terminals to S/M.
Could also be loose battery terminal.

Just check all obvious places.
Charge the battery so it's ruled out as a fault too.
If the bike is parked outside, consider water ingress and this could be bubbling due to a loose connection overheating etc.
Thats all I can thnk of :thumb2

I was chasing my tail with a similar problem on an 1150.
The "crackling" noise was (i think) the injector firing randomly.
Had to replace the HES to fix it.
Maybe your snapped alternator belt has taken out the HES cable.
Would also explain the strange fuel pump noises and lack of starting.

Cheers guys, i'll try having a proper look tomorrow

Am i right in thinking pulling fuse 5 resets the motronic followed by the ignition on and 2 full throttle twists :augie

Well that went well

Pulled fuse 5 and disconneted all the leads to TPS and injector on the left side to check and clean all the connections. Put fuse 5 back in and turned on the ignition to reset the throttle twists to which i get a very very brief crackle noise for the vicinity of the TPS followed by a monumental bang out of the exhuast pipe. The fuel pump then primes as it normally should and all goes quiet.

So i try and start the bike all i get is the starter turning over and no sound of any spark at all now :(

<wanders off to check the insurance policy on home start and recovery to local BMW independant who wont open till wednesday at the earliest>

Hall sensor has failed.

Hall sensor has failed.

I had considered that but to be honest was hoping it was something else/less expensive. :(

Thanks for the opinion as you know your stuff rather well, so will go price replacement bits :thumb

Looks like Colban was spot on

This can happen if the alternator belt is broken.

You can do it your self.

Just buy two Honeywell 2AV54 sensors and some heat resistant wire and some more items and do like this.

While i appreciate the link and suggestion i have as much chance of doing that with my resources and mechanical ability as i have of producing enriched uranium from a pint of milk :D

If there's an Iranian community anywhere close by ask them to do it in exchange for some of your milk. :blagblah

On the other hand; it is achievable with a bit of work and you'll learn a bit about wiring and electrickery which could save you £££ in the future.. :thumb2

I know its achieveable and with time i could probably manage it however all of the work done on my bike by me is in the front garden in daylight as i have no garage, shed or big toolkit

So far from reading it i need to buy a soldering iron, vice, voltmeter, stainless rod for making the mandrell, clamps to hold the drill for drilling out the mandrel etc etc plus all the parts too

One day i hope to have the reasonably equipped garage/workshop to do stuff like this and not in the kitchen but till then i'll buy the parts and get a local independant BMW trained mechanic to fit em .............. at least i did the routine service on this bike which i have not done on other jap bikes before :thumb

Well, just a suggestion.
Maybe someone can use it. I hope.
This forum is visibly to anyone.

It's a very good suggestion and I have no doubt some on here will be saying "i'll have some of that " ....... Just not for me in my current circumstances that's all :)

Just to finalise the thread and maybe help if anyone is searching for the cracking noise thing in the future. Hall sensor had been clobbered by the exploding alternator belt and after cleaning up still no spark.......... new hall sensor fitted and fired up so thanks for the pointers and answers :beerjug:

I had a belt shred on me in October, I was 1,300km away from home in 39C heat on the Namibian border, had a spare belt but am so glad it did not take the hall with it:D

Can I please have your old unit? I am interested in mainly the metal part.

catadan @ fastmail.fm is my email address in case you want to talk about this.
How much is an off the shelf BMW HES and is it plug and play ?

Depends where you buy it from. Motorworks, BMW dealer or euromotoelectics.com ;)

Dan.
