1200 riders waiting for AA to kickstart crappy little 12v battery

Think you're confusing voltage with amp hours. :tosser

I'm on my 2nd 1200 now and I've got a Rallye suit, ali panniers sat nav etc & like to spend lots of time cleaning it after a ride. I suppose that must put me in the inexperienced catagory then.

Hi all,

I wouldn't normally reply to threads of this nature, as a fisherman I think I recognise a well placed bait when I come across it, but i'll add my tuppenceworth anyway!

I think its all a case of people believing their own bullshit! Barrack room bollocks or whatever you want to call it, of course the 1200 hasn't done all the things that some people (and i repeat only some people) have done on 1150's simply because there has'nt been the time!

When I started looking for a GS there was loads & loads of s/h 1100/1150 gs's, most with modifications of some form or another, some well done with a bit of thought but most were a advert for touratech or similar! Alot were less than 2 years old with very low milages, hardly the double hard world traveller type bikers some people would have you believe all 1150 riders qualify for by just buying a certain model of motorcycle/or by subscribing to certain website's

Bikes are just bike's, they are there to be enjoyed, dosn't matter which model motorcycle it is, 800/1000/1100/1150/1150gsa/1200/1200gsa (or their riders) shouldn't be placed on a pedestal (or at the very least the riders shouldn't put themselves on a pedestal as seems to be happening on this website)

Just get out and ride the f*****G things, as often as you like, where you like, wearing what you like, as fast as you like!

Shep :bounce1

Changes regarding owners

I suspect for a start that already there have been many more 1200GS's sold than in the first couple of years of the life of the 1150 so the range to whom it appeals will have enlarged. However the interesting point in this thread is that the bloke who started it (Slim) has three bikes in his garage (even if one belongs to his wife.) He is thus in a unique position to contribute to the the current discussions regarding the the relative merits of the 1150 Adventure, the KTM and the 1200GS. Does his wife find that the reduced weight of the 1200GS makes it more user-friendly than the 1150GS? Surely his wife must be fairly tall? My wife who is about average finds it quite a climb up to the pillion of the 1200GS - (and she used to be a members of a local 'Club Alpine!')
The appeal of the GS range in France has always been rather less than in the UK or Germany, simply because the average height of the population is less. When I went with friends to have a test of the 1150 range when it came out none of them would even venture to sit on the GS - it was too high for them.
Have I lost the thread ? Sorry, so I had better just say that the performance of the GS is far more than adequate so why be crouched down over a sports bike ? Best wishes, Brian

I've got the bloody lot - 1200GS - Rallye II - GS1 boots - GS gloves - cool shades.

I drive 500 miles a week minmum commuting to work. 18000 so far.

I dick around on the Ridgeway at weekends when its open (honest!).

I dream of Morroco and end up in Swindon.

I hack around London as required for work.

I wash it and admire it and catch myself in Woolies window as I scoot past.

I pick up kids from school - do the Sainsbury's run - meet a few buddies now and then at a pub and stand around lookin' 'ard.

I am one of the people who uses the bike for just about everything...and I CAN understand why anyone else would enjoy using it solely for any one of the above.

Never owned an 1150 so can't know what I am missing.

Yes, my wife is tall. She is 5' 11" and very fit after years of of working on the ranch.

As far as which bike she prefers, she likes her 1200 the best of our bikes. Pam has ridden my GS1150 Adventure alot but with the exception of the fuel range can't find anything about it thats better than her GS12. She also has put quite a few km's on the KTM, and throws it around pretty well although again just doesn't find it in the league of the GS.

I'm alittle worried that when she gets her hands on my GS1200 Aventure next year, I might need to ask if I can ride it once in a while.

My local BM dealer was going to throw in a jacket with my new bike, but i'm not going to take it now. I'd rather lose out on the €600 jacket and look cool

On the subject of who buys the R1200GS, there are many ex ISDE riders in Australia who are snapping them up. Without mentioning names, the rider with the most ISDE gold medals in the world has one, and has recently also bought a HP2. A multi Australian Safari winner rides an R1200GS, and many of his Safari and ISDE contemporaries also ride that model. These are very serious and competent dirt riders. Working in a BMW dealership, I have also noticed a significant conversion rate from sports bikes. My gut feel is that 60% of R1200GS buyers are previous F650/1000/1100/1150GS owners, 20% ex dirt riders who haven't been regular road riders, 15% ex sports bike riders who have realised that the GS is the ideal mount for Australia's generally poor quality roads, and 5% newbies.
These are not accurate stats, just a gut feel.
Generally, riders in Australia understand that many rides will involve some sections of dirt. With care, these can be handled on road bikes, but much more fun on a GS. The GS has to be the best sports/tourer on the market for our roads, particularly the bumpy sealed roads which are often worse than the dirt. And when it comes to the dirt, the GS is surprising capable in competent hands as demonstrated by these ex-ISDE riders.
