Got my GS today, 1200 - 54 plate..:clap

Swapped from my Aprilia RSV1000R and was questioning the decision all the way to the shop.

However, i must admit that after a good few miles covered today i think the GS seems brilliant in handling and rider viewpoint etc..(I may be covering ground quicker than i did on the Ape?)

C,mon enlighten me, whats the easiest way to get it on the centre stand as i seem to keep standing on the stand and not a lot happening?

Thanks Rhodesy..

Put on weight :judge

Not sure about the earlier years, but the 2010 pops on to the stand fine... Just standard procedure... But then at 6' 5" and quite a few stone over what I should have, I guess, when I put my weight on the centre stand, the bike gives up all attempts at resistance :augie

Thats why i got shut of the Ape cos i put on weight.... If i put on anymore i'll be moving to the back seat of a trike :blast

Patience and practise, if then you still have a problem there is a small folding lifting handle from Wunderlich that might help. I think most of us just put all our weight on the centre stand and lift gently via the frame. On saying that I am over six foot and not light!:augie

Although not strictly an early GS, my '96 1100 is a piece of cake to put on the stand.

apparently early GS's had a crap setup for centre stand geometry!

I've had both a 04GS and 07GSA, both have been easy to get onto the centre stand without any lifting or pulling. My technique is to get the bike upright and balanced on the two centre stand feet, then just stand on the stand lever i.e. take your other foot off the ground. It then pops up. I'm 12.5st, so not the biggest tosser!!

I heard mention of a recent re-design to the centre stand - although don't know when this was?

I do exactly same technique as you, although i always rock it very slightly when i first push stand down to make sure its level on the centre stand.

But on the similar recent thread someone mentioned early generation 12's had a different design on the stand :nenau

Stand it upright, grab handlebar with left hand and rear grab rail with right hand.
Stand on the lever and it's on the stand before you know it without any problems. :thumb

I'm 5"9 and about 12 1/2 stone and never had a problem.
I felt a bit intimidated when I first saw it but the BMW salesman showed me how he did it and I've done the same since.

Hope this is of some use.

the effort should be in the legs.......not pull up solely on your arms or back. you'll put your back out.

grab the left handle bar with left hand, right hand on left handside frame, right foot on centrestand. push hard through leg and foot onto centre stand and ease it to your right (or behind you) pulling the the left handside frame......your left hand will pull the bars with you.

im 5ft 6, weigh 9 stone and i can get my 1150gs onto its centre stand with no drama.

i find for me pushing on the centre stand hard through my leg is effective for someone with no upper body strength.

Sussed it i think, need to get it on the feet and a bit of rock to / fro with rear lift and its there...

Not easy mind, but its defo all about technique..

Thats for the help chaps :thumb

I had a 54 plate 1200GS - crap centre stand; a lot of effort needed. My next on, an 06 followed by an 09 had much better centre stands; significantly less effort needed.

+1 my 06 is easy to get on the stand, no grunt required.
