Hi all, I,m a returner here so this may have been discussed BUT! was looking over 08 GS1200 and it looked like a body part is missIng, yep the plastic cover over the starter motor ( i had one on my 05 GS12) dealer says this is right, looks wrong to me, anybody had any probs with this exposed area, can you get a cover? :nenau ta Ian

I like it better you can keep an eye on things and clean as needed. This pic is from my 04 gs when i took the cover off.

I knoticed this as well on the 08 GS I test rode. I don't think its a good idea as I would hope the cover keeps some of the muck off. But as 'Prop' says at least without it you can keep an eye on the connections.

As it just another way to save BMW £1 per bike:mcgun

Hmm, I would still prefer a cover, but nice to see what goes on behind the bodywork!

I cant see why BMW are not fitting the cover anymore...crazy....it not only looks better but gives the starter more weather protection.
Eveyone now should see how important it is to grease the starter motor terminals.
I cover mine once a year with battery terminal spray.
The whole starter motor also needs to be coated with something like ACF50.

The corrosion on those terminals in that picture will prevent power getting through very soon.

Bmw should grease them up at the factory during production. So much for German efficiency!

Sorry I dont mean to moan and whinge again but we keep coming across these inferior practices. After all we do pay Rolls Royce money for these bikes. :spitfire
