GS1200 OUTSIDE TEMP PROBLEMS

Mines way out - My dealer fobbed me off about it when the bike was new but it really is annoying seeing the thing flashing on the dash panel when it's no where near freezing.

I’ve checked the cylinder head and incoming air temperature sensors with the GS-911, they’re spot on, so it seems it can be done...

My tip for BMW is - If you can’t get it right, don’t bother fitting it.

Couldn't agree more. My car temp. guage is always spot on and is to the nearest degree. 1200GS is given to the nearest 0.5 degree but is always too high - near zero it is a couple of degrees high but if temp is around 20 it tells me it is closer to 30! Bloody useless. And why place it where there is the chance of being influenced by engine temp.? Accountants probably said an extra few inches/feet of cable would cost too much!

The early 1200RTs had the sensor above the rear wheel and were hopelessly inaccurate picking up masses of exhaust heat so they relocated it to near the beak - you can't win!

My GSA seems spot on - possibly climbs a degree after it has warmed up but quite good enough.

I sort of understand the reaction above but, if you've paid for something, you tend to want it to work.

I can't see the point of an "outside air temp" sensor on a bike. Isn't it a bit like fitting an ashtray??? I know it's cold outside, because I'm sitting on a bike OUT IN THE WEATHER.

I agree:thumb2

However, the temp sensor on my GSA seems accurate enough, and corresponds with my car and local Garage forecourt temp display.

It cant be too difficult to get it recalibrated, surely...dont call me sherly:mmmm

You've got to be a bit of feckwit if you don't when it's hot or cold, heatstroke or frostbite, melting tarmac or ice. :bounce1

Fit a calendar on the bike, that'll be a better guide. :D

Moto Guzzis temp guages are accurate. They always show the temp in Mandello despite the far that you're somewhere else.

Or perhaps a sundial, it won't flap in the wind so less moving parts to go wrong.:D

Just got off my bike! Judging by the icy puddles & frost on the verges, I would say the temperature was hovering just above freezing - but with no temp gauge on my GS to confirm this, it may be 20c out there?

Only temperature important on a bike is the engine temp!:blast

Mine seems pretty accurate as it matches up with the signs on the autoroute, summer and winter; Today it was 2°C and it flashes on and off with a warning sign that the roads may be freezing. I find that useful. In the summer it is often up in the thirties and it gives me a figure with which to taunt my sons freezing in an English summer.

Wot he said :thumb2

Pidcocks!!! Sounds like the usual drama queen one up man ship bullshit. Last year some bloke asked about powering up his zumo sat nav other than some £60 power lead they were trying to sell him, “can I not use the aux socket?” he said “well you can but it will turn your bike into a washing machine” said the salesman..

On my 09 gs the gauge always reads 4 or 5 degrees too high and i know the bloody gauge is just a gimic but if they put it on the feckin bike you expect it to work properly.

I think some of you boys need to get out a bit more

Neither did I but it comes as part of the computer pack or some such bollocks. Anyhow my 06 GSA has it and all my mates down the pub know it :blagblah

Snap. :thumb2

I once sat on the autoroute south of Lyon in a huge jam due to a crash, straight beneath one of the gantry signs, as the sun blazed down. It was very annoying to watch it go, 35....36.....38......41......43......
Surely you must have been in a car? There is always a way around on a bike - the French would expect you to take to the grass, use the emergency lane or worm your way through the fire engines and ambulances and even a gendarme would encourage you. (Although you would have to raise your visor and be ready with a big smile - and it helps to have a Union jack on your screen)
