GS1200 still running -- shock horror

Am I the only GS owner who has not had a breakdown this week ????
Reading this forum makes me worry about getting to the shops and back without having to call international rescue.
I used to have a Triumph Trident (1971 vintage), now if you think BM's are bad.................

Stop moaning and enjoy your bikes, or swop them for a bland Jap.

i suppose you will forgive it ...i can tell .....
but may have a slightly different outlook from thereon in :thedummy:augie
 
People worry too much... it's the same on every bike forum.

A very large number of people have bought this bike... a few of them come here to discuss their issues.... those without issues (who may also be here) are out riding the bike they love (rarely posting about non-failures... they don't want to jinx theselves.. =)... So it seems to the casual reader that the bike has a greater percentage of breakdowns than it actually does..

I'm aware that I may have one (or more) of several known issues effect me... I still love the bike. I read about the failures, and especially the fixes and work-arounds... and I hope to repair my way out of waiting for a recovery vehicle...

Being a 1200 owner I happen to notice whenever an 1100 or 1150 owner submits a failure related thread... to my eyes there are just as many of those threads on here as there are 1200 threads... perhaps more if you consider just how many more 1200's there are on the street... (more than both the previous models combined I believe...)

I believe the Turkey trot boys spent more time fixing 1150's than 1200's if I read it all right...

I'm not saying the 1200 is perfect, or that BMW should be excused for some of the idiot things...(why no immobilizer bypass for a failed ring antenna?)... but it is a fine bike and gets people great distances over mixed roads...

There are a lot of bitter people, who feel betrayed by BMW, and some with good reason, who take great relish in joining in posts like this with negative comments.

I bought my used 30k miles, 04/2004 servo ABS model 7 months ago. This is the supposedly most unreliable model year, with the unreliable servo ABS brakes. Yes it has corrosion on the front engine plate but otherwise it does what it says on the box and hasn't let me down yet, though I've a fuel pump relay with me just in case.:augie

Sure as night follows day someone will post up a comment like "Well wait until it breaks down and serves you with a £1,000 bill...". And it probably will break down at some point, and I'll e-bay to find used parts to fix it. :cool:

The 1200GS is a very good bike, and in my opinion a better ride than the used 1150GS I had before. But I can only talk about the individual bikes I've owned :beerjug:
 
With more than 100.000 sold bikes (R1200GS models) there will allways be some with faults:mad:. People experiencing faults are more likely to give in on their frustrations:mcgun. I'm sure there are thousands of sattisfied 12'er owners who are very pleased wtih their choice of bike/model:D:thumb2:bounce1

It's my second GS and i'm still happy with it.:aidan
 
Mines good but I think a large part of that is because I do 80 miles daily MOn-Fri. Last time I came back from a fortnight away the fecker wouldn't start (long story).

To all those with reliability issues - go out and use it more. A daily thrash and a bucket wash every 3 months whether it needs it or not will keep it in fine fettle.
 
Im on me third GS (two 1150s n this 1200) Now I dont like to temp fate, but....... Ive never (touch wood) had any kind of breakdown. Bit of corrosion on this 1200 and a gearbox oil seal, but all looked after foc by dealer.
I put an Odyssey battery on coz the original was getting a bit "tired".

Just ride and enjoy... your on the best bike there is. GS is "The Boss"

Reading these forums could make you paranoid though.
It did me for a start. But you grow immune to most of the tales of woe.:D:D

no tirade from me .....i just just dug out the figures
13 percent failed before 10k miles nearly 5 percent had catasrophic failures befor 20k ......
i rely on bike for my job .....it simple isnt good enough for a 11 grand machine

i would expect minor niggles but have never been stranded at the side of the road before the gses [1150 apart which was good] .........................i have never had a major engine /drive or brake problem before ...
im not patronising anyone but i rely on my bike to get paid 27000 miles per year and it simply didnt do the job yes u get a curtesy bike ....but it takes 2 hours each time to swop the radio kit over /both ways ......taxies to pick it up lost wages ...so you get the idea ....

dont blame me aint my fault ..........:eek:
