Hi all,

I'm looking into getting a GS for the first time (either that or possibly an Africa Twin). I’ve got 3 years of riding experience and previously owned a CB650F and a Norden 901.

The GS I’m currently eyeing comes with crash bars and luggage racks, which is a big plus—but I’m a bit concerned about insurance. These accessories seem to bump even the cheapest quote up to around £1500/year.

My question is: do crash bars and luggage racks come as standard from the factory? Most GS models I’ve seen have them, so I’m wondering if they’re OEM. If they’re standard equipment, maybe they don’t need to be declared separately for insurance?

Also, if anyone has a spec sheet or knows where I can check what comes standard on recent models, that’d be super helpful.

Thanks in advance!

For the GS TE, crash bars and luggage racks are extra, for GSA TE they are standard. If you get vario panniers for a GS they don't need the racks. If you get a GSA you wouldn't need to declare them as extras.

Thanks for your answer GSian. It's a BMW R 1250 GS Adventure TE, so I assume they come with the bike. What would be your recommendation for the choice of panniers for the GSA standard racks? Thanks

It’s a long time (and 2 bikes ago) since I bought BMWs own metal GSA panniers and used them on my 1200 and 1250, but I personally think you could do worse than just getting those for your new purchase.

I have the BMW aluminium boxes. There are others that fit straight on that also do a good job. Such as Bumot etc. The main reason I went OEM was so that I could use the same key as the bike. Not sure if you can do that with aftermarket ones.

insurance will be eye-watering unless you have a brick garage

Thanks, guys. I have the Givi Canyon panniers, so i'lll add the fitting kit on the OEM pannier racks.
