Been considering buying a GS911 and wondering if it’s worth it for me.

Bikes got another year to run on warranty but I do currently plan on keeping it beyond the 3 yrs and highly likely I’ll take out the extended warranty.
Realistically it’ll be serviced at main dealer or a specialist.
I do tour on the bike so I guess I may not always be 5 minutes from a Workshop.

The 911 is a significant investment so I was wondering what those who know the device think and whether they’ve had occasional to use it to get themselves out of trouble or save a trip to the dealer.
Basically, in my situation is it worth splashing out in one?

Thanks in advance.

Thinks in advance.
I believe they are on offer at the moment . They are really worth having

I have one, which I’ve used in anger a couple of times on tour. Once to reinstate the KMH setting for speed readout, when it had been deleted in a software update and once to recalibrate the suspension after it decided to throw up continual errors. neither instances were tour stoppers, but made it worry free.
Given the current Black Friday offers on them, it is a bit easier to justify than paying full price 😉

I am currently in the black hole of researching Motoscan and GS911. :nenau Massive price difference.

One thing to note with the Motoscan app, is it needs connectivity to the internet to confirm your profile/access. So, if you are in an area of no signal/data access the app won't work as it should e.g coding, deleting error codes, etc.

The GS-911 does not need internet connectivity to operate. You can connect it to your phone via wi-fi for OTR error code clearing, and some coding too i believe.

Motoscan and an OBD LX here, just the job for service reset if you do your own
Same here and is quite capable of more. I've used it to recalibrate/reset ESA and throttle steppers, set kph on the speedo. Recent updates have added newer models. Probably not as polished or as functional as the GS911 which remains the gold standard but for everyday servicing it's pretty good for the price.

If you only need a code reader/clearer, go down the Motoscan route.

The GS-911 is more useful if you're doing your own servicing, want to do some coding/make changes, re-set service intervals etc etc.

Which Motoscan can also do to some degree. It's a tough call between them.
The basics, yes. But not the more dealer level side of diagnostics and functionality. Such as the suspension level calibration.

Don't forget that, unless you use all ten slots on the GS911, there will be a strong resale value should you sell the unit in the future.
I got mine unused from this site for a good price. Doing home servicing now Bahnstormers in Maidenhead has closed its great. Apart from resetting the service indicator, checking and clearing faults, I've used it to try the sports screen and changed the heated grips to five heat settings.

Does the GS911 adjust ride height now, or does it cycle it to each end of its travel to recalibrate & relearn? Motoscan will do the latter.

Another potential benefit of the Motoscan route is that you'll then own a generic OBD reader which can be used on other vehicles. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the GS911 is for BMW bikes only?

The main thing for me, if you're out and about without network, GS-911 can work in its D2D mode, which allows emergency functionality.

If your bike goes into limp mode and you're 200kms away from the nearest dealer or town, it's easy to identify the issue (you will have to rectify said issue yourself however), and then clear it to allow the bike to operate again.

Imagine for example, one of the main fuses blow, and the bike just won't do anything at all, how do you identify that? If you jump the bike, it still won't start because the fuse is blown. Plug in the GS-911, it will identify the fuse blown by a fault code thrown by the engine ECU, and you can replace that rather than having the bike towed.

If you were looking for something simple that works in your own garage, the motoscan is the way to go, price point is much lower, but so is the value for money. If you're looking for an all round solution, GS-911 is your way to go.

I believe I am correct in saying that Motoscan is not supported on an iPhone.
I went for the GS911 non wifi version. It was cheaper even with buying the lead to fit onto a 10 pin plug (F650GS twin).
I just carry a small pc laptop so am not affected by lack of wifi. I do all my own servicing so it pays for me !
I bought it from a company called Gendan (authorised retailer) and paid £245 for the GS911 and the cable.
