GSA 1200 Pannier conversion to F800GS

Hi All,

I hope somebody out there can shed a little light on this.

I have just picked up a set of 1200 panniers off ebay and wish to install them on an 800GS that I pick up on Saturday.

I have had the 800 pannier racks fitted at the dealer. An initial look at the fittings points towards the mounts simply being the opposite way round on the 800 rack.

Can anyone out there confirm if this is the only difference and has anybody made the conversion?

I think that's the only way you'll get 1200 ally panniers to fit the F800GS, as it's not just the direction of the fittings that's different, but the shape of the inner face of both panniers is quite different as well. Nothing's impossible as the saying goes, but I think you'd be in for a lot of work.

That's assuming it's the aluminium panniers you mean. If it's Varios, then you might as well forget it...

You will need a big hammer Johno ....

The pannier on the right side is totally different, with the inside face being cut away at an angle to match the bend in the frame so fitting round the contour of the bike. The exhaust cutaway on the left pannier is also different.

@Johno: The one and only way you can mount R1200GSA panniers on an F800GS is by means of the Holan rack system:

My dealer an I can confirm the mounting lugs and pannier-to-frame-locks on the R1200GSA panniers will not fit the BMW factory F800GS pannier racks. As Micky says the GSA and F800GS panniers are differently shaped and not interchangeable. Mounting lugs face opposite and the pannier-to-frame-locks are located totally opposite on respective versions. In fact the ONLY common thing between the GSA and F800GS panniers are the pannier lids - with speed limits for the 800GS and the R1200GS printed on the inside!

I am confused, are you showing 1200GS panniers on the Halon frame fitted to your 800GS? What are the advantages over fitting the 800GS BMW frame and cases, cost?

Am trying to decide on panniers and have been given a price of £805 by Bahnstormer but at the NEC the BMW stand say the price was £725, what does your configuration cost and what is the width of them fitted please.

The Holan frames for 1200 boxes on the 800 were available before BMW got their act together on bringing out the 800-specific alloy panniers.

That's an advert picture from the Holan website and not mine. My 800GS has the OEM BMW F800GS alloy panniers + OEM racks.
I'm showing the Holan frame with 1200GSA panniers from the Holan website.

I simply wrote a contract on the OEM BMW F800GS pannier frame and the OEM tailormade 800GS alloy panniers since they looked good, fit my needs well and the price was baked into a lump total sum ( bike + extras ) in august 2008.
I have no idea what the OEM racks and panniers cost in Olde Blighty.
You'll have to check with your own UK BMW dealerships.

In my view the Holan R1200GSA pannier setup on the 800GS didn't look right, and I was lucky enough to get the dedicated 800GS panniers only a month afterwards.

Width of OEM BMW F800GS pannier setup: 1080mm
Handlebar width: 870mm

Tim, I did question at the NEC and she was insistent the price was for matching locks but she also questioned whether Bahnstormer had included fitting. Thats pretty expensive fitting mind!

Will have to ring round another couple of dealers.
