I have ordered 2 sets of Panniers & a Topcase for our GSA from a BMW Supplier in the UK.

It is cheaper for me to fly from Cape Town to London, Gatwick, rent a car, buy the Panniers in the UK and return home than buying the same items here in South Africa.

So I will be coming to me mum-in-laws home in Bromley, Kent the end of the month for a couple of days to collect my goodies.

I will have to reclaim my VAT at Gatwick however as this would virtually pay for my flight.

The help and advice I need however is for additional items I wish to order... however the HMS Customs will only allow dealers to supply me with a VAT reclaim form if I personally walk in and buy the goods from a shop or supplier - ie the Zumo 660 Touratech cradle sits in Wales.... how the devil am I going to get there and back and do the rest.

Any info and advice on where I can find a centrally located supplier that would give good pricing on extras - including the new SIDI Adventure Gore boots - near BR5 1NG ?

Suggestions would be humbly and gratefully received!

Pete

Could you not order from in-laws and have it couriered next-day to that address?

Howdy BB - yes I could, in fact I can order and pay for the goods from Cape Town - the problem is the VAT refund document from Customs. I have to physically be there for the dealer to verify my Passport and to stamp the document that the goods will be leaving the EU. :(

Ah, missed that kinda essential bit. I'd contact Touratech and see what they have to say. I'm sure you aren't the first person to be in this situation. Perhaps they have local resellers?

Could you fax a copy of your passport id page to TT and have them verify it from that?

For other equipment like the boots you could contact Sondel Sports or Hein Gericke in London, I'm sure they could get in what you want given a few days notice and it's a short trip into London to collect.

Thanks for that advice.
Have spoken to TT as well and been advised that if I don't buy in person, they cannot help..........

Seems I'm going to do a bit of a train ride to Petersborough for the Panniers though :thumb2

thanks for taking the time......

Is it actually worth you travelling to Wales to claim the VAT on the touretech cradle.

the VAT is only approx 17 GBP --- it would cost you more than that to travel to Wales from Kent.

I agree - nope would not be travelling to Wales... just Petersborough :augie

This seems really odd to me. How can a dealer/supplier verify that the goods are being exported if you are at the shop rather than at the airport? It's been a few years since I was involved in exporting goods, but in years gone by, the customer had to take the goods plus the VAT Invoice/Receipt, together with their boarding pass to HM Customs at the airport to reclaim the VAT. There is (or used to be) a dedicated office airside at Heathrow certainly to do this very thing. You would then have a porter take the goods off you to get them to the baggage handlers and then on the aircraft.

I'm willing to accept if things have changed but I still don't see how a receipt stamped in a shop in Wales in anyway proves export.

That's how we did it in the past, however got nailed last year with a whole lot of kit that I bought - arrived at Gatwick with passport/ticket/goods and was laughed at even though I had actual VAT or Tax invoices clearly showing dealer VAT number and amounts. I seem to recall it was close to 200quid we lost! The official would not listen to any reason - the fact that we had a flight to catch to Dubai made it easier for him... we could not stay and argue, and once I got on the plane, I was stuffed.

As far as I remember it was to verify that the person buying the goods was in fact a non-EU member and the VAt-407 produced at the airport had to be verified by Customs. :blast

Pointless arguing with them.. they are ALWAYS right.... so I'm just trying to pre-empt their reasoning here....

Check out this site - explains their reasoning

So things have changed then - and not for the better IMHO. Good luck with your purchases - hope it works out for you.

Just a thought

There must be someone else (a dealer ?) in London or Peterborough or wherever else you are going who could order the Touratech bit and then supply it to you with the relevant certification of the VAT. I know my local dealer will supply Touratech bits. Presumably many / all of the others (or an independant) will do likewise.

Dave

There is a Hein Gericke opposite Balderstone BMW in Peterborough...I'm assuming that's where you are going?...or at least at their old address on Lincoln Road.

You should be able to get your boots in there if you gave them a call and ordered them, or they may have them in stock...and anything else you may need.

Contact (UK) 01733 898338 [email protected]

There is another bike shop right next to HG's too...Infinity...so there might be another option for your items.

Infinity, Millfield, 176 Lincoln Road, Peterborough, PE1 2NW‎ - 01733 341 341‎

I don't think any of them can help you with the Touratech stuff though.

Steve.

Steve - will try them both. Hoping the snow would have gone :augie by the time I get there.... don't have snowshoes for the walk from BMW... :D

How much is a set of panniers in SA out of curiosity?

For the Panniers & topbox - just over R 20 000.00 - so around £1700.00 and it's costing me 600 quid over there.... return flight = £450

bit of a difference then!

 That is a lot of rant. Have we stumbled onto a potential export business opportunity? :green gri

these farkers will find a way of upping the prices.

I noticed that BMW Motorrad had promo's on in UK & Europe where all GSA's were sold with a free set of Panniers. Betcha those free sets were removed and sold seperately!

Nice country - but methinks the day you get born - part of the baby-shower gifts should be a 5litre can of Vaseline... 'cause you gonna get shafted your whole life! :blast

I'll be moving to the UK end of this year... will then see what could be viable for export!

I live in Bromley. I get my gear from either Infinity Motorcycles in Clapham, Dobles Honda in Coulsdon, or Hein Gerieke on A23 near purley.
