Just taken delivery of my new GSA to replace my 2005 GS :) I got the BMW aluminium luggage with the new bike and with every lock is a plastic 'plug' on a short length of rubber lanyard. Of the six locks on the top box and panniers, only about two of these plugs push fully into the lock.

The dealer explained that these plugs are to prevent crap from entering the locks which is fair enough but surely they only do their job if they fit properly?

Considering how much the luggage costs (yeah, I know the panniers are free at the moment but it's not the point) it's a bit crap.

Any fixes for making these things fit properly? Are they actually of any benefit or should I just pull 'em off and bin them?

 all of mine fit fully and YES they are worth having unless yuo enjoy cleaning out lock barrels....

all mine fit and is in new luggage. Try a splash of wd40 in the barrels they are probably just a bit tight... just like a virgin lol its been a while

As above mine fit well, Keys a pain to get in n out, but i'm putting it down to newness.

I've just done the same and bought a GSA with the free side panniers. did yours come with any handles/liner bags. or are they all extras.

just been on a trip, by the time i'd carried them into house for loading and realised. it was a bit late in the day to do anything about it, as off we went following morning,

If they are extras does anyone have any recommendations as to what to buy

Thanks.

Bob, a couple of mine were exactly the same when new.

I added a bit of WD40 located them as far as they would go, then banged them in with the palm of my hand, they have been fine ever since.

Its just newness, its suprising how effective they are at keeping the cr@p out :D

Best regards Stretch :beerjug:

theres a thread on pannier handles somehwere on here, but essentially you can either go the home brewed method of straps with some padding on for the handle bit ( ISTR Micky was the maker of those) or as I did the BMW set....
they aint the cheapest (quelle surpise eh ?;) ) but IMHO do the job well, they are easy to attach and as well as carrying the panniers themselves, they also double up as load straps to carry extra luggage on top of the panniers, but are about £22 a pannier:eek:

Inner bags....well theres the lovely tasteful BIGIRGHT SILVER gen BMW ones.... I went for Kathy's bags much cheaper and do the job as well, or for the real cheapskates theres some sports bags out there that fit...
Bags of any description are worth getting as otherwise you get black ally rubbing marks on whatever is in the panniers, also if you get to a Hotel/B&B in wet weather you just remove the bags to your room not the wet filthy panniers...:D

My panniers had a mixture of hard plastic and soft rubber plugs. It is not easy to fit the rubber ones into the locks so I went to the dealer and changed to all hard plastic ones. Only a couple of quid

Thanks for the replies. I've persevered and managed to get all in bar one with some gentle persuasion :thumb

I shouldn't worry too much over your new luggage, the panniers will look great once you get a few dents in them like mine.

+1 for inner bags.

Carrying panniers around when they are nice and new is OK but after a trip when they are covered in exhaust smoke, road crap, mud and rain you won't want to carry them anywhere, particularly into a decent hotel. Also, as already noted, those black marks you get on all your clothes when they have rubbed against the aluminium for a few miles is not very attractive.

Lots of options from very basic to very flash. Personal preference after trying a few is the Kriega bags. They look smart, are very practical and they adjust for different pannier sizes (I originally bought them for Zegas).

pannier bags

see if you can find a KTM dealer. they have a set of good quality panner bags that fit the KTM adventure. same panners as supplied by BMW. i got a pair of KTM bags for £36.00 the pair only small problem Nice orange KTM logo.
