likewise, wire brush on a drill. Not sure they're painted more of a surface finish in the steel on my 2011GSA

They're bright plated. If you've broken through the plating it'll only be a matter of time before rust appears I'm afraid.

best off whipping them off and giving them a coat of wheel silver

Mine didn't rust when I put a ferkin great scrape down the side. So I suspect they are stainless. They also have that dead feel and weight of the stuff.
I had the new (used) bars powder coated because I'm a tart.

Powder coat = tart? Wont get mine chromium plated then goodness knows what I would be then!

Gloss black goes nicely with gloss back cast alloys. One day I guess the corroding wires will get sorted but I'm in no rush.
