do you really have to get the belt cover off to get the strut out? trouble is, it means taking most of the crash bars off too & that looks like a right PITA.

IIRC on an 1150, you can remove the front wheel, undo the strut top mount, then drop the wishbone far enough to get the strut out. does that work on a 12?

Actually - now I come to think of it - I'm sure I read somewhere on here about someone who had struggled fitting his new shock on his 12 until he realised that he needed to take the belt cover off.

i think you pretty much have to do it by the book

belt cover has to come off so that the shock can drop back and down before getting it out top first.

GSA crash bars cross piece can be removed by springing the lower sides apart, no need to undo engine mounts :)

i wouldn't want to try & get the shock, top mount nut off without a windy :augie

top nut is no problem, just need the right socket and an extension bar
bottom fastener is much harder as it is a recessed torx head bolt (50 from memory) which is very very stiff. I needed an extra long handle to shift it.

Look forward to the "how to" with pics appearing soon, and the road test results ;)

re: how to.

was going to do that, got pics and notes, but when i got to the windy gun bit i thought some people might not actually have one to hand :nenau

i have got an alternate way of doing it though, so will probably go ahead. i felt it was quite an awkward job. i think someone on the other site said Revs Racing did a supply & fit on a GSA and now only do supply :D

the guy who did this guide left some interesting bits out, mostly applicable to the GSA, but also some important specified safety stuff is not in there either.

not quite done yet myself. should get it back on the road tomorrow. looks nice :)

here's one of the problems that had me scratching my head for a while.

hydraulic remote no longer fits where it is supposed to go with pannier frames. tried a few alternatives, but pre fitted steel hose limits some options and avoiding the wheel wiping it out even more

Changed the shocks on my 12 without, just put a weight on the rear seat or a mate, jack under the motor to lift the bike and drop the forks as low as they will go. Just slides out.
PS: if doing this alone as i did take great care when jacking the bike up or you will lift it off the stand.:augie

thought it might.

GSA Front Shock

Yes, you do need to take off the front cover and the front engine bar to fit a Wilbers shock. Even then it is a tight fit, with the forks dropped and the bike jacked up until the front brake line is bar-tight.

Cheers, Rick

ps when you fit the new shock, don't forget the top-hat washer that came off on the top of the old shock! Some numpty found it after the whole lot had been bolted back together. :o
