GSA fuel gauge

I have a 2008 GSA I am on my 4th ! I use the trip incase it goes again. Car users wouldn't put up with this. :blagblah But great bike though.:bounce1

Took a trip down to the local BMW dealer, the mechanic oops technician came out switched the ignition and the gauge worked, looked a real gimp

I rang my dealer (who I have a lot of respect for) to explain that my fuel gauage on my 2010 GSA did not register when I put £15 in but was OK when I filled up.

The answer I got was:-

'They all seem to do this and BMW are aware of the problem. Until they get back to us there's not a lot we can do, but now you've complained you're on our data base and we will contact you if and when BMW provide a solution'

Not ideal I agree, so I think I'll contact BMW myself!

Fuel gauge always "full"

Interesting thread.
I got the opposite problem, my gauge is always showing full. This is a 2008. Anyone else got a gauge showing full?

The Haynes manual shows nice pictures of a fuel gauge as a float on a pivot. However when I looked, the fuel gauge is just a plastic stick, no moving parts.

Haven't contacted the dealer yet, wanted to check the forum first as I fear contact with the dealer will be expensive.

I think the very first bikes had a float but later ones were a fuel strip which I think works on pressure or should I say is supposed to. Haven't heard of an always full one before but it isn't impossible I guess. Generally they just go very inaccurate in part of the range. Mine for example is completely US in the middle but accurate at the top (top two segments) and the very bottom. When the light comes on its time to get fuel. Trouble is I don't trust it as maybe one day it will stop doing that so I use my trip and zero the MPG each tank so I can work out what fuel is being used easily. The MPG is fairly accurate as it has nothing to do with the fuel gauge unlike the useless range meter. So for example if I get 45mpg then I am doing 10 miles per litre so 330 miles. I know this is useless and BWM should fix it yada yada but it has been replaced twice and well life is too short to spend it in a dealer getting it fixed all the time. My choice and until they come up with something that works I wont bother getting it fixed again.

my bike was on reserve and I put 20£ in it and the fuel gauge didnt move any ideas chaps

now then

mines an 09 GSA, i had the same problem, putting in 20litres & 80 miles later telling me i needed fuel!
i took it back to the dealers & they swapped the sender unit.
So far not had any trouble with it, but it's best to reset the trip meter each time, for 20 litres i usually get about 250 miles

I had this problem, they now use an electric strip instead of a float, apparently they have loads that are faulty. It measures resistance to calculate the amount of fuel but the guy told me they reject half of them before they even use them. Got mine done under warranty, now is sorted.

Also have a 2008 shows full all the time and has done so for the last 4 or 5 tankfulls.

Dealer will change the strip whilst I have another ride on the 1600:clap:clap

My 08 went as well....common problem that has been known about since MU was introduced. Mine was fixed but with a £43 contribution which buys a 2 year warranty....just as well because went 4 months later and now back in being fixed.

Mine's just gone on an 09 Adventure.Showing empty all the time. I think I'll get it fixed once, then if it goes again rely on the trip meter until BMW come up with something more reliable to replace the sensor with.
Bit of a let down on what is otherwise the best bike I've ever ridden by far.

I'm currently touring Scotland and my GSA fuel gauge is a load of arse, I managed to get across the top of Scotland via Tongue/Dunnet/JOG to Wick before refuelling at Tesco (cheaper) and got 34.54 litres into a 33 litre tank.

The bloody fuel gauge had been saying I needed to refuel after only 200 miles. Good job I had a spare 2 litres in a plastic can just in case.

Klankys place wanted me to pay £1.57 a litre.

I know it's remote up here, but it's not the feckin moon is it.

As an aside, I rode the bike pretty hard from my mates place in Glasgow back to Fareham down the M6 where I ran out of fuel at an indicated 260 miles on the trip, the fuel gauge which I was ignoring had rightly told me to refuel yet I assumed I had about another 50 or so miles left in the tank based on the previous experience.

Why is it that these things can read correctly when you are thrashing the poor bike into a gale force headwind, yet read wrongly every other trip ??

Luckily for me I had about a litre remaining in the 2 litre plastic can I carried for my stove fuel, which got me another few miles to the Truck Haven where I filled up with another 35 litres (at £50 ouch). Once more refill at Warwick saw me safely home after 6 and a half hours in the saddle.

That's twice this week I pushed my luck with the fuel gauge on my GSA, the second time I lost.

Another faulty guage (or not?)

Hi......I think Imay have joined the clan of faulty guage owners! I have just filled up my 2008 GS1200 and although the guage shows full on the bars the range computer is only resetting itself very slowly it is going up about 5 miles per minute as I ride. It was only 4 miles to home so has now only reached a range of 67 miles.......it may rectify itself when I go out on it again (fingers crossed!). Iam puzzled as I would have thought that if the strip was faulty it would also affect the bars on the guage? Has anyone else experienced this?
