GSA on Track

Whats the GSA like on the track ?

Doing a Knockhill track night on Thursday. I have ridden the track alot on the Ducati and driven it loads over the years but wondered what a GSA will be like ???

Any advice ?

Not quite as good as an ordinary GS but you can't have everything.

Suffice to say that I once rode around the outside of a poorly ridden GSXR1000, coming onto Railway and I wasn't unduly embarassed by the pair of ex-Pidcocks
Boxer Cup race bikes that were out at the same time.

Bike Mag did a comparison between an R1200RT and a Suzuki RGV 250 (or maybe the Aprilia with the same engine). Both have the same power to weight ratio.

Of course when wanted, I cant find the article, but believe it was Knockhill. The RT was slightly faster than the RGV. What it lost in agility it made up by braking deeper into corners and going straight from brakes onto power.

Tractor tyres (eg Tourance) arent that great... You get to try out the traction control quite a bit if its cold and damp...

Took my GSA on a Level 1 & Level 2 California Superbike training course at Stowe Circuit, Silverstone. Plenty of foot scraping the tarmac action, but didn't have the b*lls to get it down any further (i.e. heads or engine bars down on the ground).

Plenty of folks on fast bikes expressing surprise at how well the big GSAs scoot round the track.

Slow or intermediate group will be fine. It's fun. Look out for nutters on track bikes.

I've enjoyed it a few times and will be heading for Snetterton in June

Did a Ron Haslem race day at Silverstone last September on a 06 gs had a great day couldn't keep up on the straights but held my own around the bends,don't worry about trying to race other bikes you won't just try and concentrate on the race line keep it smooth in and out of the bends and you will get faster lap by lap.

Any bike is good on track, controlled environment, good run off and good surface, no oncoming traffic no speed limit. Its about the riding not the bike.

Be prepared to be surprised. Took it to Snetterton last year and had a right laugh with it. The guy on the GSXR600 couldn't work it out, he had me on the straights but by the second corner I was breathing down his neck and I had him at either Agostini's or Corum Curve. That was basically how it was for the day. Bollocks about the GS as I could happily keep up with an expertly piloted GS ridden by a mate of mine. Whole day on a tank of fuel with the GSA but it likes to drink oil when ridden hard. Oh and I took all my kit on it too, took the panniers off, had a good time and then at the end of the day, panniers back on, off I went back home. Fantastic.

I'm taking my 1200GS to Snetterton today for a track day.




I'm only watching though. I'll do Snetterton later in the year on my Dinosaur ZZR600

Absolutely fine. Top speed is a bit limited but the wide bars give you plenty of leverage in the corners. It'll be a very pleasant surprise.

Done several track days with mine on Tourance's and going back to the Nurburgring in a week for the second time. I actually prefer it to my sports bike!, Oh dear!

Had my 1150GS in the intermediate group at a Knockhill day end of last year, on original style Tourances. Loads of dedicated track bikes on racing tyres and using tyre warmers. It was a bit scary in the damp but in the afternoon it dried up and I was able to catch some of them in the corners. Serious fun, melted the Tourances and ground away bits of (raised) footpegs.

The lighter more powerful 1200 can only be better on track.

Have done Cadwell long circuit three times now.

Going into and out of the corners, the GS matches anything. Better brakes than most, low down grunt out of the corners. It's when you get to a straight that the high revving jap 4 suddenly makes sense......

But anyone can ride fast in a straight line... doesn't really hold any appeal to me.
