Hi Folks
I’m looking for some quality pannier liners for my newly acquired 1200 GSA (2012 model) and would appreciate some advice from anyone who has one of these fine machines.
I understand (please correct me if I’m wrong) that the aluminium panniers are not waterproof, with this in mind I have been searching for a set of bags that are. The only ones I’ve found that claim to waterproof (as opposed to water resistant) are ARD case’s and BMW's own. Unfortunately the ARDcase left hand pannier bag is only 8” wide to deal with the exhaust intrusion therefore appears to waste a lot of space. Also the top box bag is completely the wrong size. The BMW ones cost a staggering £240 + a set!.
Any experiences/suggestions would be appreciated,
cheers,
Craig

I use Tesco jute shopping bags, perfect fit and £1.49 each. Mine even have little ladybirds on them which match the red bike well. :rob

And the panniers are waterproof.

I have a 2011 GSA with BMW boxes and they have never leaked, even in atrocious weather conditions. They dont really suffer from condensation either which surprised me. I put all my stuff in a rucksack and chuck that in the boxes. Its important to check the sealing lips line up properly, its easy to leave a strap or the steel securing cable hanging out which would affect the seal.

Standard BMW boxes are waterproof, I have ridden for hours in monsoon conditions and never had any ingress in mine.

Never had a drop in my boxes either, but, like you I didnt know they were rainproof before going away with the wife (and a woman with wet pants is never a pleasant thing), so bought some genuine liner bags off fleabay for about £25. They are really well made but not worth £200+.

(No offense meant if you are into women with wet pants)

Some bags made to measure in vinyl cloth by a seat restorer or leathers repairer would be way cheaper than £240.

GSA PANNIER & TOP BOX BAGS

I bought these from rattler on here, no idea where he got them but you could message him.
Fantastic bags loads of convenient pockets/zips etc, they fit exactly in the ally boxes and the pannier bag for the pannier over the exhaust even has a clever extra section on the upper half of the bag.

Thanks for all the replies folks, they were very helpful, now I know that the panniers are water tight,my options have increased so I've plumped for some Main event bags. They were the only one's that I found that dealt with the left pannier exhaust intrusion.thanks again,
Cheers

Not only are the BMW panniers watertight, they are even airtight - Hence the pressure relief valves on the rear. Early panniers didn't have these valves, and they could be almost impossible to open after a mountain descent as the increased atmospheric pressure held them firmly closed.
